I am working with the original trim and a hardware kit from B/E....

Any advise is appreciated

Justin

This is not timely but, when I did similar install on a 69 Coronet years ago...
This is the wide rocker molding right? The retainer clips purchased from YO, the material was too pliable. This allowed the molding to pull away from the body and make gaps. This pisses me off everytime I approach the car. Eyes are drawn to this. Hopefully B/E makes a more faithful reproduction. Idiot body man (Shelly, Danielsville, Pa) tossed the orginals. FYI.

Dennis...

This is not that wide rocker trim, X's in 69 did not have that. See attached pics. What I am trying to figure out is how the trim attaches using the plastic clips with plastic push pins...

Just a question for my learning. Do those little plugs push into the T shaped piece from behind the steel? That would be a pain.
Same question I am pondering but I do not think they do. It wouldn't make sense to do that on the factory line back in the day.

My trim and clips are at the body shop and they are unsure as well. They want to make sure first before trying to tackle a learning experience on a painted car. It is an area I am not familiar with, obviously.

So do they go on the car first and the trim snaps on over them? Or do the push pin and clip slide in the trim and you snap on as one piece? Or do they go in from the backside?

Never done it, but what it looks like is the plastic clip goes in the hole, plastic pin goes in hole in clip pushing out the ears to keep it in place. Trim clips on to it.

You have 8 with studs and acorn nuts. Are these for the trunk / rear fender section. 4 per side?

Threewood,

Thanks for the reply....The studs with nuts are 4 per side and appear to be used on the 2 long pieces(door, trunk). The other ones use the plastics clips only. I think that once all plastic clips are installed onto the body, you line up the trim with the stud hole and the trim snaps over the clips and the other pieces snap over the plastic clips only.....A very tricky situation with shiny paint and I have asked the resto shops about it and they all say, "been so long since we have done a 69 GTX, I cannot tell you, lol"

The original trim from door forward was never removed from the car but the 2 1/4 pieces were and were glued on back in the day. So the stub with acorn was only on the front and rear end of the door in the latch/hinge area. Hence, is why The other 4 I believe were on the 1/4 pieces.....What is irritating is there is no reference to be found that shows this and why offer a kit with no reference? If you didnt have a reference how in the he## did you make a kit?

Those plastic pins look like the fasteners used to attach the chrome strip at the top of cuda doors. You set them in the holes push the little barrel plastic pieces through and that spreads the tabs to allow the plastic piece to hold to the body. Then using light pressure you snap the chrome over them in increments.

I've never done a gtx so I'm no expert but I've done tons and tons of mopar chrome using these attachments from cuda trim to first gen chargers.

Make sure that the chrome is straight and flush first. On cudas, especially repop, the top door chrome has to be bent to shape perfectly of it will bow up, prior to locking in the clips.

If patti don't have a trick for gtx then no one does FYI

DD,

I agree completely! Thank you for the information and that was very helpful.....I just dread dealing with this....Want to cover all bases before I start the "snapping" process....

the best repops of these plastic clips are the ones that came from indydoc I believe and for the 66-67 charger peak mouldings. The smaller ones

Found these pictures on the web. However they do not show how the clips are installed. But It does give placement. If you already have the holes the little rectangle clips pop into the hole. Then you install the pins to spread them out inside the body. From what I was told the metal posts with the speed nuts are for the tail end of the door and the piece below the GTX They have to be inserted into the chrome then pushed through the hole. And the speed nut goes on from inside the rear panel behind the regulator. I am about to install this on a friends car I will take pictures of how it is supposed to be installed. This set of pictures are for placement of the clips. The next post will have pictures of them installed when I do it.

Got it. I could take off my trim pretty easy im sure it was because it is 40 plus yrs old. I new a body man that always used vasiline on all clips and nuts when he put on trim. Said it made it easy ti install and i i ha to say he made it look easy. But when i get to that point i will just have to be real careful
