So about an hour ago I went to the hardware store to get grass seed.
The bill was $13.76 and the Girl check out person had no clue why I was giving her $24.00.
I said so you can give me back a 10 dollar bill and 24 cents.
Still confused she did not know how to enter the $24.00.
Finally figured it out after I explained I did not want a pile of ones in my pocket.
She said is two 5's okay. I said no I want a 10, well it's the last ten in my register and I will have to get more if you want my last one.
I took the 10 and walked out shaking my head.

It's too confusing for the younger generation. We used to do that all the time....not so much now.

That's funny and sad at the same time. If they don't have something to tell them how to give change they don't seem to be able to figure it out. I've had examples where I did the math in my head as did you - and they weren't even able to counter me with a calculator. They were clearly lost. Glad we learned the way we did in school - had to show our work so the teacher knew you knew how you arrived at the answer.

I do the same thing for the same reason....
Fewer bills in my billfold. Yes, it confuses the hell out of people young and old why I do it and how to make change. I have to tell them what I get back before they ring up the sale. Apparently they trust me because they give me the change.

The other amazing math trick. If I know cigs are $7.28 a pack and put in $42.72 in gas before I go in to the store, they are simply astounded that my total came to exactly $50.

Them : "Wow! Betcha couldn't do that again!"
Me: "As long as you don't change the price of cigs I can do it all day. It's called math."

dollars and cents , that how i got my nice though math . she new what a quarter was and how many , and a dime , and ect..... she got all forms of schooling math from a dollar bill and some sents , home school before city school any day .

It's like rolling thru the fast food window placing your order, you tell them that you want a "cola". Nothing else, not coke, not Pepsi, just a cola. And they say, "we don't have coke is Pepsi ok?" And I reply, "It's a cola isn't it?" They still don't get it and get all confused.

I always tell them, "Oh, by the way, that's to go." Lol

Nailed it Kevin!

Hate to say it, but if I were that gal's manager I would have fired her for accommodating you. There are a lot of thieves out there who use non-standard transactions as a means to confuse a cashier into giving them more change than they are supposed to, which is why cashiers are trained to receive and issue funds in a certain way. They are cashiers, not bank tellers, and when someone does something like the OP did they should call for a manager.

Seems stupid to have to do this, but there's millions of bucks lost every year due to folks playing change games with the cashiers. :(

Went into a Mickey D's years ago. Cash register went down. The kid could not make change.I had ordered 3 99 cent items. I told the kid it's $ 3.15. He was slackjawed. Could not understand how I could do the
Math without machine, or pen & paper. Jeez!

I was at walmart (hate the place) and saw a guy trying to pull that crap on a kid with a $100 bill...the guy was arguing and just changing the bills on the poor (dumb) girl....I spoke up and said you had better get your manager because he is trying to rip you off...the guy was ready to kill me and once the manager threatened to view the overhead camera(is there one?) I told him what his change was and he left peacefully. I know its not the same as what the OP is saying but was kinda fun.

Hey man, I need some change, you got 2 tens for a 5?

My three daughters were at their soccer game this weekend and wanted hot dogs. So, I walk over to the concession stand and order three hot dogs (I hate hot dogs) at $1.50 each. The 18 year old male looked at me like I asked him a quantum physics question and could not calculate the total. I told him they are $4.50 and handed him a $10.00. He looks at me with a vapid look and asks me what change he owes me. Simple math is escaping the iPhone generation.

You would be surprised how often that sort of crap works. Some poor under-paid schmuck working as a cashier, four hours into the day, putting up with jerk customers, and their recognition differential and good sense drop to about 0.1 on the GAF meter. The folks who pull these scams usually spend a day at the store watching for when shifts change so they can get somebody right at about the 80% mark.

Kinda tough to hang this on today's kids. I remember having to teach servers how to count back change in the 1970s. Aye carumba! Going backwards through numbers just sent them off into confusionville.

I quit trying to make things easier for cashiers (and myself) a long time ago. The transaction that put me over the edge was at a gas station. I put $11.00 of gas into the car, walked in and handed the clerk a $20 bill and a $1 bill. She looked at me and said, "your total is $11.00 so I don't need this" and handed me the $1 bill back. She then counted me out $9 and had no clue as to what just happened.

You guys must be all quite clever...I get confused and have to break out the paper and pencil when calculating in 'feet and inches, and how many perches to the acre....ounces, pounds, stones, ton....'
Life is much easier in Metric. Everything is done in 10's and 100's.
I know it's of French origin, and that it goes against all you teachings and upbringing, but man, life is so much less complicated with Metric.
I'm so glad I was born at the time when Pounds, Shilling and Pence were being phased out. The Brits still do all this weird crap with 12 pence to the shilling, 20 shillings to the pound....and the Horsey Crowd still talk in Guineas which is like the difference between miles and nautical miles.

My 10 cents worth, and I know I'll get **** slung at me now.... :D
