Just ordered a new old 9000 series AFB carb to replace my stock one as I could not get the jet out and I just realised it has a 5 inch head, any way to use the stock 4 1/4 air cleaner with it?

Look on Ebay, they have composite carburetor spacers that will either increase the size or decrease the size to adapt the carb size to the air cleaner for whatever you need for your application. Good Luck.

Maybe it's because I'm performance-minded, but why would you "neck down" a carburetor? I would be at least tempted to modify the air cleaner base for a larger hole.

Purple Beeper has a point, the spacer adapter is the least costly way to accomplish using your stock air cleaner, however there are new aftermarket 5 " bases that could be used too that will give you the full flow to the carburetor. They are not as wide across as the original bases, so it would give you an unsilenced air cleaner in the end, due to the incoming air coming into the filter from every direction. This might be your best bet and because it sets under the air cleaner, nobody is going to see it anyway.

Oh that sounds perfect as I'd love to take advantage and still keep the stock cleaner, can you send me a link to what I need if you have time as I see loads of different ones online?

Like this one?

Hey Alex, I took a peek at your link and I think that's "basically" what 65satelliteman is talking about. One big thing I've learned about air cleaners is to determine the exact size/shape of the air filter.

I suggest you measure the diameter of your stock air FILTER and also how wide (thick) it is. You might also want to measure the total outside diameter of air cleaner lid. Then, you just check sizes of whatever 5" hole base you can get your hands on and make sure A)It accepts an air filter that fits your lid and B)It's size/shape "makes sense" compared to your lid (not 6" too wide or something).

I like 65satelliteman's concept. IF you had a flat air cleaner base like in your picture and IF that base was maybe 1/2" or so smaller diameter than the lid and IF you have a "closed lid", then you could basically create your own un-silenced (open) air cleaner and it would still look stock. I think it would be absolutely the best if a K&N-style air filter fit into that as well.

Also, when I've run the basic style parts-store air cleaners (like the base in your link) with Holley carburetors, I've often had to dent them a little here & there to clear things like the needle/seat adjusting screw or the air horn.

Hello Again----I'm way to old and computer dumb to know how to send links HA! HA! HA! However I think Purple Beeper explained it pretty well for me. Good Luck.

Thanks guys I've ordered that 14 inch base plate as it will fit my K&N filter then I can screw down the original dual snorkel and it will look stock but with all that extra air coming in underneath. Perfect solution.

Oh one last question, what is the air intake hole on the base plate for?

If you are talking about the one sticking out of the bottom side of the aftermarket air cleaner base, it would be for vacuum. However your car should already have that covered, so just cap it off with one of those black rubber solid caps. Good Luck, Charlie.
