Hey Guys,

I'm rebuilding the steering column in my 67 gtx. It is a manual steering column.
Does anyone know the correct colors/finishes on the exposed part of the shaft, bottom of the column where it is shown in the engine compartment, and the lower coupler that attaches to the steering box?

Pics below show what I'm referring too.
Thank you!

The coupler and shaft was dipped in semi gloss black up to the level of the plastic bearing retainer.

Thank you. So the plastic bearing retainer was already installed. I can beat then some got some black on them as well.

Was the rest of the column also semi gloss black?

Correct, That portion was dipped after the column was together and the bottom of the bearing had paint on it. The outer frame and pot metal pieces were painted with a lacquer paint with texture. They were painted prior to the assembly and are based on your interior color typically.

I get the paint from Instrument Specialties but other members have different options just search, "dash paint" it is the same type.

Could the coupler have been dipped while on the shaft? If that was the case, then the retaining clip and two (for lack of a better work) bushings would've have been caked in paint.

Just as I said above(post #2)...dipped as one unit and yes around the coupler seal was build up....but not on the upper bearing

The pics are from my unmolested 69 GTX I am currently restoring...

Oh, I copy. I was just saying it's a weird way to do it once it all built up for fear of gooing up the coupler.
But your last pic was very helpful. Leads me to assume that the rubber underneath that cap would also be covered in paint (although it would probably flake off shortly after).

Your 7th pic, is the the left of the black the area that goes under your dash?

7th pic the shiny portion is where the lower bearing sat and the black portion was the shaft dipped...so the end not seen is the coupler
