New to the forum. My dad has a 1969 Charger 383 he bought in 69, and still has it to this day. All original except paint and body restoration a few years ago. Original (not rebuilt) motor, trans, interior... and only 68,000 miles on it. He has kept this car as a family heirloom. Recently we decided to start researching the car a little more to know more about it. He bought it at Dodge City in Milwaukee Wisconsin. It had about 1500 miles on it... and was driven as a demo by the owners wife they said. As I’ve been looking into it, I’ve noticed a few things I can’t explain, and figured maybe this group of b-body experts could help us out.

First I’ll post a couple pics, then I’ll ask my questions.

The car is a 383 and 727 auto... again, both original. The guy that restored the car did a few basic things mechanically to get the car reliable for my dad 10 years ago. The guy said he rebuilt the carb, but from what I can tell, it looks like he put a newer carb on it. It’s a Holley 4160 4-barrel, but I’ve seen mixed documentation saying all 383’s came with Carter carbs, and then some documentation that says a 383HP version came with a Holley. I can’t verify what the original carb was, but really want to know what motor we have. Here are some issues I’ve come across...

1) The unsilenced air cleaner is wrinkle finish black with no 383 decals on the lid of any kind. Shouldn’t it have a “383 4-barrel” decal on it?

2) The motor is still the original turquoise, and never been out of the car or rebuilt, but the valve cover by the oil fill looks like it’s painted pretty sloppy with runs in the paint, and there is orange paint showing through under the oil cap where the turquoise has been scratched away by the oil cap. Why would it be orange? Could it be a Magnum in disguise?

3) the fender tag has it listed as a 335HP 383, which I think is the Magnum or an HP version of some kind? This backs up my theory about a Magnum in disguise.

4) the fender tag has a second fender tag attached to it that no one seems to know what it’s for. Was this something the dealer ordered for the car that was custom or unique?

Here’s what I’m wondering... I’m thinking through my amateur sleuthing and minimal knowledge... maybe the “owners wife’s demo car” story was actually more like the “owners drag racing car” and maybe it was ordered with a 383 Magnum (orange) and it was painted and un-stickered to be more stealthy? I may be way off, so hoping you guys and gals can help us determine what we had here. He’s trying to get in there to get the casting numbers off the block to see if that helps.

Sorry for being so long winded, but hopefully you enjoy the pics, and can appreciate the love my dad has for this car, even though he isn’t the typical “car-guy”, not too mechanically inclined, but has a smile from ear to ear when he fires it up for a Sunday drive with mom. Thanks, Dave

Can’t answer all your questions but I can welcome you to FBBO. Sweet car in any respects - Thx for the pics.

Lots of words....with some cool pics....welcome to FBBO.

Welcome to FBBO. Really sweet Charger!! Don't worry, somebody on this board will have all the answers for you.

Welcome to the forum!

The holley is incorrect.....All BB came with a Carter focusing on 68-70 unless you had a six pack...

The small tag under the fender tag is an inspection tag

Pull the rear seat bottom and locate the build sheet and when you do it will give you all the options the car had...

If it is a 383 magnum look at the flat pad by the alternator and if you see an HP stamped on it then there you go....To me it doesn't really matter what is important is if it is the original motor....Casting numbers do not answer this nor does the vin but the BS and the ID pad below the alternator will....

The blue to orange thing on early 69 builds is constantly debated....I always go on what the car tells me and further inspection will show what it may have been...

Welcome. Sweet Charger

Thanks for the info and the welcome. I found a sheet on another forum that shows there was three 383’s available in 1969, the 2 barrel, the 4 barrel, and an HP model. Another quick web search claimed that the 2 and 4 barrel models had the Carter, but said the HP model had a Holley, which then would make sense. I’ll have him check the block. I’m in AZ, and he’s in Wis, so gettin it done may take a bit. He’s had the car since late-1969, so if there was any change on the motor, it would have happened at the dealership in it’s first 4-5 months. Been in our family in the same garage since so we know nothing has changed since then, besides potentially the carb during the restoration. I actually pulled the build sheet out of the car when I was like 17 (1987), and handed it to him to have it decoded, but haven’t seen it since... it’s in a file somewhere that we know he still has, but doesnt know exactly where it is.
Shouldn’t the air cleaner have a “383” sticker on it either way?
Guess I should have just said hi here, then posted these questions in the right sections. Lol. Was so excited I jumped the gun.

Oh, and I’ve noticed it makes a difference... the car is NOT an A/C car.

Welcome aboard- I can say that ur air cleaner is the same one my '68 Bee came with, no sticker.

Well it was the 383hp, then racing took over for awhile, now a stock 440.

Here’s a close up of the orange paint peeking through the turquoise on the valve cover.

So Your 383 was the 335 horsepower HP? I’m really starting to think that’s what is in his car, but didn’t know they put that in the Charger. Thought it was only the 2 barrel and the 4 barrel, but all things are pointing to this being an HP. He’s having eye surgery today, so I won’t get any answers for a week or so I’m guessing. Thanks for the info.

Welcome. Find the numbers on the pad below the distributor and look down just above the oil pan on the side of the motor and give us those #s. They should clear up your paint questions...
