As I recall it did take a lot of patience to get the socket on the bolt due to the U joint flop.

I have some tic tac sized rare earth magnets, tape a couple to outside of a socket to hold bolt.

I came across this video about making an anvil. It's kinda long but one can skip forward to get the picture.
It is interesting that it was even done. I have fabricated lots of big and heavy things and this brings a smile to me. (I can feel the effort at every point)
Why not make it entirely out of weld rod?:realcrazy:
 
Chekov certainly went through a lot of work to save himself a few hundred bucks.
 
you can never have enough anvils ,body hammers ,dollies or spoons it is just like welding clamps you never have enough
