My niece moved from Canada to Adelaide, Australia a couple of years ago. She said that the locals there claim she has a strong accent, which is just wrong.
We used to attend the Grandfather Mountain Scottish Games every year and one year we met the guys from Clan an Drumma, a tribal clan drumming group. Great music but when we had the chance to speak with them for awhile the one guy, Jamie, sat down and ate with us. he rattled on for 3 or 4 minutes and I caught about every 4th word. he suddenly stopped and smiled really wide. He asked me," So, you two have not understood any of what I just said have ya?" We all laughed. he slowed down a bit and used less Scots slang and we did okay from then on but he was telling us of talking to fans and the fans would be standing there with their heads nodding up and down the whole time and smiling but he knew they were not getting any of it. He said after awhile they stopped trying to make themselves understood, it took to much time. lol.
Being of Cameron descent, my wife and I made our way to Achnacarry near Fort William. We were fortunate enough to be there as the Clan Chief and his wife were home. Being the only visitors that day we were given the "Royal Tour" by none other than Sir Donald Cameron of Lochiel, the 26th Chief of Clan Cameron and his wife Lady Margaret.
The estate of Achnacarry is where the British Commandos were founded and trained for war.
It surprises me how people sound from different patrs of the US! It didn't take me very long to lose my Massachusetts accent when I moved to SE Texas 55 years ago!!
I absolutely love the British and Australian mystery series that play here in the states on public broadcasting stations, but I absolutely have to have subtitles on. Part of that is the accent, and part is poor hearing.
Very cool experience Kiwigtx. Unfortunately, we here get a very poor education about other countries, even our friends, and their history. With our current school systems, it's likely to get much worse.
I left PA at 17 years old. I'm 60 and when I hear myself on video I STILL sound like i'm from PA. Very strange. People here in VT tell me I sound like i'm from the deep south because I was stationed there for years. I don't hear it though. That's cool Kiwi! Must have been awesome. My wifes clan is McLean of the Isle of Mull. There's a Clan seat castle there that you can stay over in .
Native Californian, i spent my summer in Alabama and Mississippi at the age of eleven and twelve. My friends asked why I talked so funny when i got back to school.
It took me something like 2 years to stop sounding like a Limey after spending nearly 7 years living in the UK. I got crap for sounding like a Kiwi in the UK, and crap for sounding like a Pom when I returned home.
Some days you just can't win.
