I was a journeyman welder/pipefitter for a whole lot of years, and I can tell you I've seen some real "doozies" try and tell me they can weld. Their welds looked like a string of pigeon poop all laying in a row..... So much for the Tulsa School of Welding. I told them they need to go back to Tulsa and get their tuition back.

Back in the day, I think Chrysler hired 50 cent an hour welders on the K-frame assembly line.

After 9/11 I was out of work and had some "temp" jobs paying minimum wage. At one place they heard what my previous job had been and told me they wanted me to implement a process there. I politely told them they didn't get my $45/hour skillset for $10.. They weren't impressed with that "attitude" and I was gone at the end of the week.

I'll second that. Bought a Big Block factory A body k frame from a well know vendor. Welds looked like a crappy birds nest.

Its a BS picture above. One is chicken **** that i cant even tell what welding method was used. The other i dont know either. Possibly looks like TiG. Maybe stainless flat? Is not 7018 stick. Maybe its a machine weld. There are many workers in this country doing NON UNION work and getting paid that kind of money( $18.00) Heres another clue. If you can strike a arc (stick welding) I can set you up with some stainless wire, set your machine and in the flat portion your weld will look perfect. Now what does that prove? Absolutely nothing!
