Re-import exported vehicle? Help

im looking to purchase a 70 roadrunner from Mexico. He's right by the border next to San Diego and we agreed on a price. But now I'm looking online to see if it can even be registered and I have no clue how or what I'd need done. The car is originally from the U.S. since the fender tag doesn't say anything about it being an export car.

I assume it was taken through the border some years back and just registered there as it does have plates for there. Now my question is to bring it back would I need any special paperwork? The guy said he has the title from Mexico and can actually drive it past the border to meet me near the border here in San Diego. But would it need to be cleared through customs for me to register it? I assume he can just drive it here like anyonedoes when they come to the U.S. but since he's actually selling it to us I wonder if it need customs to clear it also since it was originally a U.S. car. Not sure on the rules of importing a car back also since it's a 1970. Also what I was thinking is removing the plates and having the dmv register it as a car that's been out of the DMV system? Since it was originally from here and hasn't been registered here in many many years. But then again jfits registered in Mexico would it show up as being registered there? Or would registering it as an out of system vehicle work? Thanks everyone.

You should be able to find out import/export information from your local US embassy and/or online. BUT, be very very careful with this one. I suggest you run the VIN vs. stolen cars in the USA & double check the VIN vs. the VIN tag on the back side of the radiator core support (passenger side I think) + also underneath the trunk rubber seal at the front/driver corner. Tijuana is shady & has a long history of a place to get rid of a stolen American car. You don't want to import it just to find out it legally belongs to some other American, ya' know?

Where can I get it checked if it's stolen? I tried the DMV today and they said they couldn't unless I had the pink slip for it

I can give you guys the vin if you know how to check. I asked for a picture of the fender tag and vin and got themthey match. The radiator support I figured I'd confirm in person since I've never actually seen a car for sale that's not matching with the radiator support

Owner didn't answer my calls the last two days and I have no way of knowing if it needs to go through customs or I can register it without customs paperwork since he's driving it through the border and also not sure if I can just register it as out of system. But either way he didn't answer anymore. I'll give it a shot. Tomorrow because it is a rm21 post car

Can't see it being that easy. If I buy a USA car, I have to give US Border Service 72 hours notice before I can take it to them for export clearance and then I have to take it to Canadian Border Service on the way into the country to pay tax. Part of that is to deregister the car existing in the US and clearing it for registration in Canada. You also can't file the US Border paperwork as an individual, there is only one company that can do it for you and they want another day or two ahead of the 3 days US Border wants so makes it damn hard to buy a car on a whim and bring it back to Canada. Our guys don't care.. no notice required, just show up and pay the taxes on value.
