Taking Up New Residence

Boy that thing has more “shiny stuff” inside than a Cadillac!

It has more shiny stuff in it now...

Same insulation that I used on the roof. Made with recycled blue jeans. No itchy scratchy. Flame resistant. Fairly easy to work with.

Warning! If you order ACC carpet and see a date like on the box that I received, don't open it, just send it back! (2011)
20180312_191157.jpg

This is what it looked like when I removed it from a 10"x10"x 3'6" box.
20171218_101155.jpg

I should have sent it back but with all the hassle of shipping it back, then probably receiving another one just like it, I decided to just deal with it.
The way that they crease it when folding it, practically breaks the plastic backing. It has no memory where it's creased, even after heating it with a heat gun and bending it in the opposite direction.
20180309_134651.jpg

I removed the padding that they glued to it in order to get to some of the worst creases. Also I didn't need the padding. If you don't need padding, order it without! I had to use a razor blade to "skin" it off. It's really glued on there, especially in the tunnel area. Very time consuming.

20180309_190155.jpg

Starting with the back piece first, I had it in and out several times. Heating the creases and trying to flatten them out enough to get it to lay where it suppose to.

I found that I had enough under the seat to swipe some to replace the carpet on the console.

Moving on to the front piece. What a mess to try to work with.

You need to locate as many things as you can in order to figure out just where it belongs. The gas peddle location is key along with the piece being square. I used tape to mark the overlap of the back piece and also used the holes for the seats for a reference. My anvil came in handy for weight so it doesn't move around on you.
20180310_172615.jpg

More or less I got the driver side located first, still checking the other side to make sure it was close too.
20180310_201210.jpg

Once I got all along the underside of the firewall I was still having problems with all of the wrinkles. I came up with some homemade sand bags. Bought some heavy duty quart size freezer bags and filled them up with sand from my blasting cabinet. They really helped!

Keep in mind that I'm heating all of these problem areas with a heat gun, packing the sand bags on the heated area, then letting it cool.

On to the fasteners, kick panels and thresholds and useing a soldering iron to burn the holes for the seats bolts.

All in all it turned out pretty good. It took me five days fooling with this. Special order your carpet in a flat box with no folded carpet. It's worth the extra cost if you can get it that way!

Looking great! Bet it sat because it's an unusual color. Probably sat in a warm warehouse .

This car and many other Polara 500s with this interrior, came with a dark brown carpet, like what you see on the console. I don't particularly care for the dark brown and when I saw that it was offered in the same color as the seats and door panels I thought it might look better.

I think they fold those carpets right off the hot mold. They would be real hard to fold up when cold.

Bet they pack them like putting plastic mesh around Christmas trees. Box on one end and a taper chute on the other end. Might be over thinking this.

By the way, I bought these stainless steel sizzors from TSC, $18 and I cut all of the insulation on the floor and all of the carpet trimming with them. I only used a razor for a couple of small holes. They work great and are still sharp!

While the seats are still out I have to get the parking brake peddle assembly painted and installed.

Refurbish the windshield washer peddle assembly and install.

When I originally installed the firewall insulation, Detroit Muscle only had the 1965 design. (Bottom piece).
20171229_120210.jpg

Now they make the correct one and I'm going to replace it. Laying on new carpet without any seats in the way should be a breeze!
20171229_120253.jpg

Also I need to get the console back together before installing the seats. It's a lot easier to get to the fasteners.

I had cleaned up the E-brake assembly months ago so got it out and did some painting and reassembled.

The cable was well preserved in all of the undercoating. Just getting to it is the trick.

A small funnel taped to the end, put a small amount of oil in it and wait for it to come out the other end.

Cleaned up and detailed the windshield washer pedal. The switch and rubber pump checked out ok.

Looking good- heat sink on lighter(?), I think I used to know why it was there.. but the ‘kid from Akron’ playing with Cleve.Cavaliers has me engrossed at this time. 33yrs old & he’s still going strong.

Everything your doing KK is helping me and many others to follow. Thanks mate.

BTW is that a brake bias or line locker?

Maybe a circuit breaker? There isn't one on the dash lighter. FSM has nothing ...

Wow that looks very nice wish I went that rout on my 62 instead of the lizzard skin. Not real happy with the results of the Lizzard skin.

Well the Lizard Skin has to be a better sound deadener than nothing. I am concerned about the heat transfer from having the headers and full exhaust. We'll have to see how it does.

I had a '64 "back in the day," with headers and I really don't remember any extra heat in the car. It still had the factory carpet. Of course we really didn't notice a whole lot when we were kids as long as it was fast and loud. That's all that really mattered!
