Wheel brake drum heat damper springs

Looking for some input on the damper springs. I have 11" drums on the rear of my 68 Charger. The original damper springs are rusty and while I was fine tuning my pinion angle with the car on jack stands and wheels removed, I let up on the throttle too quick and blew both springs off. I know Ma Mopar put them on there for a reason and I'm wondering what you guys think about how important they are and if anyone is making new ones?
 
They are to change noise frequency so you donot hear the brakes as much

I couldn't find them on their website and they didn't reply to my email. I found some new ones made for the Chebby crowd though. They are a little longer than the mopar springs but should be up to the task. Apparently some people toss them but they are supposed to stop vibration noise so I will be putting them back on.

Longer? You should be able to just throw those on and won't need my bucket trick! :eek:

What I meant by longer is longer that the 32 21/32nds that the parts book says they measure. My rusty spring (the unbroken one) measured 34 1/4". The new ones I bought are 33 1/2". I don't know how you throw them on or use a bucket trick. I have put a few of them on in the past. I just hook them together and roll them on. No rocket science involved.

Called and left a message on their answering machine. No return call. Sent an email to their contact email address and they didn't respond to that either.

Has anyone ever noticed a change in brake noise/vibration with them on vs them being off? I never have....
 
I guess I have not had any experience with them not being on any of my 60's cars.
I finally got a call back from Bill Rolick late this afternoon. He had been out of town for the past week. He explained to me that he no longer stocks them because there is not much call for them. He did tell me that ECS Automotive sells them. I have not called them to see if they have the correct 32 21/32nds length or if they are all 33.5 for 11" drums.
He did tell me they are an essential part to quash vibration chatter and are more important on the front than the back. I can't say that for a fact nor can I explain the lack of the damper springs on finned drums. However, maybe it explains the front end vibrations some people say they can't fix.
My take on it is that Automotive engineers decided they were needed so I put them back on.

Never experienced front end vibrations after leaving them off....and even ran a 10.60 1/4 mile car with 11" drums without the springs. For years I heard that the springs helped reduce chatter when they were being cut on a drum lathe. Whenever I had any problems with chatter with any kind of metal on my engine lathe, I just ran a few rounds of duct tape around the OD and that usually did the trick.....and I cut a few drums on it too.

Never noticed a difference......correctness aside I would leave them off IMHO....or just go disk....
 
All brakes are noisy but are not in most peoples hearing rang so you may not hear it but some people or animals can
so if your dog cringes when you use the brakes add the spring

My hearing used to be pretty good until I spent a couple of years on an AF base with F4's that flew almost constantly....and going to too many concerts, drag racing, gun ranges, loud shop stereos and the list goes on....
