Going to remove the exhaust manifolds from my 440 this weekend to restore them. I know the manifold bolt extent into the water jacket. Do I need to completely drain the collant, or can it just be partially drained?
Thanks....I wasn't sure if the manifold had bolts or studs. If they are studs, I will just keep an eye on them as I back the nuts off. If the studs stay in place, I won't bother draining the coolant. The studs should stay in the head. I doubt that they will come out. But, yes, to be on the safer side of things, you can drain out some coolant.
Thanks, I am going to start a regime of penetrating lube and heat cycling tonight. Hopefully there will be no issues! If it's been on there a long time I would soak all the nuts and studs for a couple of days before trying to remove it.
Most come off just fine, but the water jacket studs can leak just a bit of moisture and the cap nut gets frozen on.
Be very careful. If you break a stud on the head you have a MUCH BIGGER job on your hands. I've done it.
