How does one identify what speed switch is in one's car?

If you're referring to what speed... you have off, one and two for a two speed. If there is no positions that you feel an engagement, then it's a variable speed.

Did you bench test the one you have? It could just be the contacts under the cover plate. Sitting for a long time, they might just need a little help to get them started again. Check the fuse also.

I have no wiper motor or linkage, just the switch. Now I know what kind of motor I need to be on the hunt for.

What do you mean by variable speed, I guess I’ve only seen a 2 speed and single speed on an early B body.

The switch has no positions except off. Works as a rheostat just like your headlight switch when you dim the interior and dash lights.

They use a bar resistance plate on the back of the switch to control the voltage. It also has a circuit breaker.
