Thermoquad questions

It looks to me like the top section and the throttle rods have been painted. Normally the throttle rods are green because of the nonstick coating that was applied when they were made. If the coating is missing then there is risk of vacuum leak.

Sonny, Your accelerator pump S-Link is backwards. It does make a difference, because it is bent in the middle for when the arm travels over center. Also, I like to move the acc. pump rod into the inner slot for more pump shot with this crap fuel. That is a California emissions carb, 1977. I have not confirmed myself buy I've had a sneaking suspiscion that they are on the leaner side than their 1977 counterpart. What does the sticker on the front say? Has it been through a mass rebuilder's shop?

9096, A Cali truck carb.

FWIW, I have used AFB rods bent sorted and clipped to fit a TQ to help in a tune.

Yes National carburetor.

Yes National carburetor.
The reason I asked was because I don't believe the 2146 top is not the correct one for the 9096 baseplate. It is not a gamechanger, but that is how I knew. The only drawback is, most likely your components like jets, rods and airbleeds will not be factory matched like original equipment.

A worker will have a table full of each part and grab one at random and continue assembly, If I were a betting man, I would bet it has 1966 rods. I think they were the most popular, and continue into production longest. Just a hunch.

Its probably worth a look inside to check jets, jet tubes and rod sizes just to see whats there. The top numbers, I have seen that go into the mid 70's non lean burn carbs, it may be correct because it does not have the bowel valve on it, and 9096 is 1977, but typically 2146 is post 74, 2141 is also in the mid year, and 2124 is early years. Late 70's and Lean burn get into the 2300 series of top sections.

I just found an original looking9096 on ebay with a 2146 top. So, that top must be correct, and the 9100 series must have been the start of the smogger top with the flat boss on the front. When I get in the shop tomorrow, I'm going to dissect a federal and California carb of the same year and find if there are calibration differences. Always been curious, just not the right motivation.

Thanks I appreciate it.

Is the idle circuit affected by the jets and rods or are they on a separate circuit?
