The price of gas has dropped but the price of engine oil is still way up.
Can anyone explain the reason for that.
Case of oil was 24 cans, than 12 and now 6.
The price is still about the same.

Well if you are talking about old school oil vs engineered synthetic oil I would assume the synthetic would be more expensive. But the dinosaur oil should relate in price on barrels of crude.

I was watching and felt the same way. At first I thought it was because of using existing supply but the price is not dropping. The best recent price was at Fleet Farm after black Friday. It was Havoline 5 qt full synthetic for $1.99 after rebate and discount. It was limited to three 5 qt containers, and I did get all three.

Orielly recently had 5 quarts max life and a wix oil filter for a $7 discount and a $7 rebate.

Greed....I guess you would sell your MoPars for as little as possible. Right?

When I was younger my cars would get oil changes one quart at a time.. I mean hell they burned it faster than I could replace it..eventually it was good clean oil.. Same filter but clean oil.. LOL

Motor oil prices just do not seem to fluctuate like the price of gas (with the exception of promo sales). WHY, is a very good question........to which I have no answer.

I have no inside info, but I'm pretty sure it's greed (or a functioning free-market economy if you want to look at it that way). Conventional oil comes from crude (very cheap now) and synthetic comes from natural gas (also very cheap now). If we keep paying the higher prices, companies who make the oil will keep raising the price to make more profit.

Supposedly, now...
Gasoline prices change constantly of course, but they're based on speculation of what replacement stock will cost.
Fortune telling, formulas, all that jazz....
On the other hand, motor oil prices are supposedly based on the usual unit cost of production deal.

Supposedly....

Not all synthetic oils are made from Nat gas.
Many are made from petroleum. Many are made from man made chemicals.
Depends on brand and group type.

ONLY Amsoil and Mobil 1 are true synthetics made in laboratories. ALL the rest start with petroleum, so the fact that they claim to be synthetic is baloney. $10 a quart is cheap insurance.

That is flat out incorrect.

I do not run synthetic oil in anything but the transmission and rear axle of my 2007 Ram. That is only because the owners manual calls for it.

Consumption, refining costs, packaging and distribution costs, advertising costs. All contribute to the ultimate retail cost of anything, not just oil. Millions of gallons of gasoline are consumed daily around the world. A gallon of gas will last how long ? A gallon of oil will last how long ? Getting it yet ?

Just picked up a 5qt jug of Mobil 1 0w40 for my 6.1 hemi. 28.99 with a Mobil 1 filter from advanced auto. Not a bad price at all
