Price of engine oil

ONLY Amsoil and Mobil 1 are true synthetics made in laboratories. ALL the rest start with petroleum, so the fact that they claim to be synthetic is baloney. $10 a quart is cheap insurance.
Does that mean that this Pennzoil is actually made by Amsoil or Mobil 1?

Not gonna argue either. The author is wrong.
Ever heard of Group IV and Group V oils?
Either olefin or ester based synthetics.

The last three 5 qt jugs I've bought in the past year or so were on sale for about $15 and had $7 rebates. 2 Valvoline syn blend and 1 Shell syn blend.

That's about $8 for five quarts before tax.

Used to be about $21 most places or $18 at walmart.

IMO the reduced price of crude is being "passed on to the consumer" via sales and rebates rather than a wholesale price reduction. Less shock and outrage when it goes back up, and those who don't wait for sales or can't be bothered to fill out rebates pay full, jacked up price.

I run Mobil1 in everything I've ever owned late-model from '85 on. The insides of the engines were amazingly clean once they got past six figures on miles and the 5.0 Mustang I had was incredibly clean inside at 250k miles.
That all started when I met Mr. Shelby himself on a promo tour back when Dodge and Iaccoca were peddling the turbo 2.2's.
I was impressed by two things about the man - 1)dude was a born salesman (and rather large in stature) and 2)he sold me on pure synthetic oils.
That said, he also told me (keep in mind, again, this was over 30 years ago) not to run synthetic in "them older flat tappet motors". I never have, followed that advice, too.
Current favorites for the GTX is Valvoline VR-1 (high ZDDP content). Another is the Driven line of oils by Joe Gibbs' bunch. Purportedly highest zinc content of any oil out there.

If it starts at a refinery, it is not a true synthetic. Most do. Only Amsoil and Mobil 1 START production in a laboratory. All the others have more synthetics in the container material than the oil itself.

Again that is a totally false statement.

I noticed Havoline is switching to 6 quart boxes of oil instead of the 5 quart jug, for similar money.

The synthetic oil that I use is made from unicorn horns and rainbow dust. Darned expensive stuff, but it works great.
