New Member Need Help with 440 build

Hello

Purchased a 66 Coronet with 440 car had set for 6 years was drivable but did not make the power I thought it should and had set in driveway uncovered and most fasteners/motor under hood have surface rust. Whole build only has 150 miles on it 440 .30 over with Speed Pro L2295F pistons .040 below deck, Comp cam 280H, 452 heads, Edelbrock CH28 intake, 2 500 CFM Edelbrock Carbs, headers, MSD Ready to run dist .373 rear, 2500 stall converter.

I was told it had flat top pistons I pulled motor and heads and found the dome pistons. I would like to upgrade to aluminum heads and bigger cam it appears Edelbrock RPM 60189 88cc heads are made for domed pistons. I am old school did not have aluminum heads last time I built motor. Will I be safe with 10.5 cr and pump gas with these heads. I also read that most want quench when building with aluminum heads.

I have called several sources head manufactures and the popular sites that sell parts. All are very vague say must buy parts and do mock up. I do not want to spend thousands on parts to find out they are not compatible.

Any help would be appreciated. I did several searches on the 60189 Edelbrock heads and cannot find much information, like they are not used compared to the closed chamber heads.

Your existing combination with iron heads (open chamber) sounds like a good one. There are "quench experts" on this site that can answer your question better than I can, but I believe those L2295's are designed for the dome to fit up into those open chambers, so I'd suggest open chamber aluminum heads...if it doesn't knock with iron, it won't knock with aluminum....and keep those same pistons assuming your cylinders/rings look good. I think closed chamber Edelbrocks would get smacked by the piston domes on L2295's
 
the 88cc edelbrocks are meant for "quench dome" pistons; not high compression dome pistons. the 88cc will bolt on and run but the 84cc would be more ideal. I wouldn't recommend the 500cfm carbs.
 
A friend runs a very similar combo. Same pistons, intake, 600 Eddy crabs, Eddy open chamber heads, headers. It calculated to 10.0-1 using steel shim gaskets. The main difference is a Mopar .557 solid cam. 65 Belvedere, full street weight (except exhaust system), 4.10, good converter, 9x28 slick. Been 11.30@117

Do you know which head he is using. I am glad to hear he has valve to piston clearance also. I am thinking about running the Com Cam XE275HL it has .525 lift.

Appreciate the feed back, many say the dual quad should go and run a single carb. If budget allows might switch to Edelbrock RPM and 850 Holley.

I would check with Todd Marsh @ Marsh Performance. He is very knowledgeable and helped put together a piston, cam and head package (based on my induction and exhaust choices) for my 440 build.

those are a compression increase dome. any head will run with them. quench domes are different and will require an open chamber.
 
The L 2295F has a 12.1 cc dome, according to Summit. The thing I don't like about them, is the C Height of 2.029. To be even with the deck, you need 2.082 C Height. So the flat part is going to be .053 below deck. With a closed chamber head, and a .020 gasket you will have .073 quench clearance. That's not enough. Get an ICON IC 9953, It has 2.067 C Height, which puts it .015 below deck. Then with a .020 gasket, you have .035 C Height which is just right. There are alot of pistons with a C height of 2.067. Tight quench clearance resists detonation, and helps with rapid flame travel across the chamber.

Probably not. And the 600 CFM carb mainly just flows a little more air.

there's no piston to valve clearance issues between the 84 and 88 heads. whtever you have with one it'll be the same with the other. the 500's have a restrictive primary booster (cluster) designed to enhance the vacuum signal to the main metering for small cubic inch engines. you don't have a small cubic inch engine. I think it's possible to put 600cfm boosters in the 500's and use 600 jetting. this is a common problem when people buy carbs buy a cfm rating.

From my google search boosters are interchangeable appreciate your time.
 
My build consists of the same L2295 pistons with the Promaxx Shocker 84cc heads. Runs great on 93 octane and makes stupid power with the .604" lift solid roller cam.

I had no issues with these heads whatsoever and would purchase them again
