Here is where I am at. My dad had his 440 built for his (now mine) 67 GTX. Just before he had passed away we got the engine in the car. We got every thing on & got it running. But that's it. No fine tuning No setting the timing. I got the cam card & the engine is not stock. I have no idea what to set the timing at. All I remember is dad telling the engine builder to step it up alittle. I know nothing about it. All I could find is the cam card. Comp cam intake lift 477 exhaust lift 480 intake duration 224 exhaust duration 230 110 lobe separation 106 intake center line rpm range 1600-5800 If this helps

Your initial should be somewhere around 14 with vacuum advance disconnected and plugged. All in should be somewhere near 34-36 but these are starting points, every engine is different. Using a hand held tach and vacuum gauge will help a lot as you set the initial. You are looking for the highest rpm and vacuum you can get without a stumble, Test and tune again, it's time consuming but worth the effort. I also suggest you read this article:

it all depends on how many degrees are in the distributor. you can't just throw a number out for initial timing and hope everything will work.

When you fired up the engine for the first time did you do the cam break in procedure?

my dad put on a dual point distributor, date coded plug wires, coil ect. I put in all MSD box distributor coil plug wires

While the engine is new and running in it is better to be a little conservative on the timing.
12 degrees initial and no more than 36 total.

Put a timing tape on it, 36*total probably a good number for stock heads.
