What was the approximate/proclaimed horsepower of a factory built 383 and 440 big block ?

Never mind. I found a large article on it

There were a few different specs for each engine. There was a 383 2bbl, 383 4bbl and a 383 HP and likewise for the 440. Each version had a different HP rating.

325 for the HP 4 bbl 383
390 for the 440 HP 6 pak.

Corrected now remove my red X lol

I thought the 440 bbl topped out at 375hp and only the 6 pack 440 was rated at 390?

440 HP x 4bbl = 375HP/480ft lbs torque
440 6bbl = 390HP/490ft lbs torque
383 HP 325HP as stated, w/440HP Heads and Cam
What was the torque output of a 383HP?

lol for some reason I just overlooked the 6 pak. But posted its HP rating. go figure.

My best friend had a 70 4 speed, N96 Roadrunner back in 79-82. I hooked him up with the owner who sold him the car.
My bud put a hydraulic cam (284°/.488)??
Intake, headers, gear.
It was a contender on a lot of "chance encounter" street races. Low 13 second car. A blast to ride in.
My 70 V-code Roadrunner with cam, headers, 6bbl, 71 steel crank 440, manual transmission runs so strong it's almost like a different engine than the 71 440 4bbl in my 71 R/T Charger. It's the car, gear, rear end, all lighter, leaner, better, more tactile than the Charger was.
383 and 440, both great engines.
I'd like to see a 383 equipped in a similar manner as a 375HP/396 and see what kind of output the 383 would make.

IIRC the 375/396 had a solid cam and the big square port heads. Rated at 375 in a Chevelle and 425 in the Vette. We are building a 68 Chevelle 396 Hedders all the usual HP goodies, will see how it stacks up against my 68 440 R/R.

Should rev a little easier and raise the rpm curve at a given horsepower, and not crank out quite so much torque. Still a blast i'm sure. I think we often forget what a popular engine it was.

wonder how B1 heads compare to those chevy "big port" heads?

One of my best buds had a ‘68 Satellite and he couldn’t stay with my Bee. He was rated 330hp, mine 335. Different drivers(?)

That was a very good read.
I miss him on FABO, he also did threads he called "match race" where he paired 2 musclecars from back in the day in a play by play style race. They were great. Paul was a racer from back in the day, and he made learning about that era so much fun.
