I have a good AF buddy and this was one of his uncles from a different branch of the same tree! My mother was at the Biograph when da feds gunned him down on the sidewalk. She was 8 years old at the time and was knocked to the ground by some people running past her hearing shots maybe 50 feet or so as she had guessed ahead of her. She never saw the event though and had been grabbed, as I can recall the story, by her older brother to get away from the crowd.

My grandfather told the story that he was right there and saw Dillinger go down from getting hit. As a young kid, you never know how true the old stories are. My dad corroborated it as he said the account never changed over the years and my grandfather was in Illinois at that time.

I wanted to be able to tell ya that when my mother was at the Biograph, a G-man tripped over a crack in the sidewalk chasing down Dillinger falling down dropping his revolver...instead of knocking her off her feet...and then she picked up his gun shooting Dillinger before he got away. Hoover never wanted it made public that my mom, as an 8 year old then, was the one who really shot him...but then yaz might think I was bullshitting you. lol some late Saturday afternoon humor working in the garage having a couple beers to get thru some chores. My mom, rest her dear soul, took some kiddin from her boys about this: "C'mon ma, you were da one who really shot Dillinger weren't ya"?
