When I was testing my sending unit and fuel gauge I used the full range, top to bottom. I made a few adjustments to the float level to match the testing. My silly question is: what is the full fuel tank in the tank? Is it to the top of the tank or some place lower? I put fuel into the tank until it reaches the point that fuel come out of the filler neck. Maybe the tank is not sitting correctly. Comments, suggestions?

I've thought about this myself. Really, the tank is full when no more gas will go in it (or when the pump handle stops). Certainly raising/lowering the back of the car will affect this, and also how the float sits. Short answer, it's not the top of the tank. The goal is to get the gage to read F when it's full, and most importantly, E when it's empty and getting it exactly right is tough.

When somebody actually makes a decent quality repro sending unit for the '68-'70 cars,
I'll approach this again.

Super. Thanks. That may explain my problem. Silly me thinking it was the top of the tank.

My suggestion, do as you stated. Fill the tank to the filler and verify gauge reads full. It’s a trial and error processes with any tank if it’s not reading accurately. Pain in the *** that may involve taking the sending unit in and out several times. The easiest way that I can think of is run a 3 foot level across the tank seem. Measure the seems levelness when it’s installed. Then put the tank on the ground below the rear of car at the same level. Run jumper wires from the tank sitting on the ground so the gauge reads. This will prevent you from raising and lowering the tank several times. All you have to do from that point is bend and tweak the sender arm so that it matches the reading on your gauge. Most importantly properly test the float for leaks if it’s used. Brass floats develop microscopic cracks and pin holes due to age that you sometimes can’t see. Those cracks allow gas to enter. Making the float sink. This creates inaccurate fuel gauge readings. If a float is not too far gone. Pin holes can be repaired with solder. Cracks can not. To test float, push it down - under very warm water. If you see fizzing. You have cracks that you sometimes can’t see with the naked eye. Or shake float up to your ear. If it leaks you will hear gas sloshing around.

Isn't it amazing they made consistently pretty accurate sending units back in the 60's but no one seems to be able to reproduce that effectively today...

Gina (China ) .....No testing research and development. When we support it, that’s what we get. I can remember old timers warning of these consequences. We are too far down the road now. So far, I don’t see it being reversible.

We need to continue to bring manufacturing back.... But we also need to improve the work ethic here.... People need to take pride in building stuff again....

Couldn’t agree more. I’m afraid there is something in that equation that people as a whole don’t realize or accept what honestly has happened and continues to happen. In my opinion, won’t stop happening. We had a big hand in this problem as ordinary people when we as ordinary people had a little control at one time. Most people will never accept themselves being a major contributor to our problems. We allow, all of the rich to play us for fools is one common mistake we are all guilty of making time and time again. There are other mistakes that we as ordinary people continue to make. We are killing our selves, so to speak.
This example puts everything in a nut shell: We all know technology will completely destroy the labor job industry. Destroy lives and increase poverty. We as people know this stuff.
Take a trip to your local Walmart. There is an express section that requires no employees to check you out. You just swipe your bank card. “ For the customers convenience”, they say.
We as ordinary people have a choice right now to protect ourselves against this stuff. Do you want to wager a bet in how many people you witness. That chooses to wait in line for 10 minutes, compared to how many people choose to go to the non-employed check out ? Walmart is China, where does 95% of Americans shop ? .....Walmart. It’s so bad now, there are few other places to shop but Walmart. People know this stuff, where do they choose to go ? ......Walmart.
My point is, this is a very similar example to when we as ordinary people had a choice, a little control. Watch, the decisions people make. We hung ourselves and the rich laugh at all of our stupidity. It’s getting worst my friends. It’s to the point no one can control big money, investors. We hung ourselves.

Thanks for the suggested fix process. Will attempt it soon. What is adding to my problem is that the "J" bolt brackets have been removed, why ?????. Had to find a workable solution as I initially could not find jut the brackets. I did find some. Looking for a welder/installer locally who will install them and knows how to do it correctly. Unfortunately the parts probably come from China.

As for the comments on "hanging our selves", I agree with most of the comments. We in Canada are suffering even more so from the problems of Profit First. We send jobs off shore and many US companies have moved their Canadian businesses back south. An old economics prof used a widget example -- keep reducing the workforce through automation to reduce the widget price. Ultimate result, the widget may cost only pennies but no one can afford to buy it.

And when they do, they will sell a pile of them.

All reproduction parts are made in China. Guys like us is where they really cash in. Knowing we have no other choice to get our rare parts for our rare cars. Because no one makes anything here. Rich people here take a rare, no longer made part. Contract someone in China to mass produce the rare part for pennies. Turn around and sell each part for 100 to 400 percent profit to retailers all over the U.S. That’s a lot of income. They don’t contract people here, that’s for sure. That example is one of many, how the rich are off shoring employment. What rich person wants to hire employees here that feel entitled to make $35 an hour ? That employee gives you minimal effort in production in return because they feel entitled to make it. These type of employees are everywhere and are the first to cry about losing jobs to other types of people. Heck, if I’m a rich employer. I don’t even have to hire illegal immigrants. I can hire legal immigrants and give them the same top dollar pay, knowing for a fact they will out work a self entitled employee that demands top pay and gives me the very least in return intentionally. Another example of hanging ourselves. Very few take pride in being an honest worker and putting in an honest days work. Just sign the check, these types say.
