Can a late model 440 and 727 transmission be installed into a 69 B body ? Out of a 1978 Chrysler New Yorker ? I have a 8-3/4 rear end that I’d like to avoid looking for another, for this to work. I have the smaller U-joints. But, I think as far as the rear end all I would have to do is swap to the bigger yoke on the third member.
What about drive shaft and tranny linkage, what would I have to do to link a automatic 727 tranny to a 69 b body that has a 904 auto on column ? Is this too much to figure out or is it very easily possible ?

Just swap it in. I'm not sure if the 904 is longer or shorter than a 727, but transmission linkage should swap. All you will have to worry about is the drive shaft and U joints. I may be corrected but that's my thoughts.

The first 440 and 727 for my '70 Charger was from a '78 New Yorker. The motor mount designed for all NON Hemi big blocks were the same from 1959 to 1978.

The trans shift linkage is different between the Chrysler and the Charger. The KIckdown won't interchange either.
An A-Body slant six throttle cable from 73-76 fits the 440 4 barrel with a taller intake.
Magnum manifolds seem to cost as much as medium priced headers. I prefer headers.

It’s a fairly easy swap. Use the big rad out of the ny if it will fit. U will need motor mounts and the brackets that bolt to the motor. Will need a drive shaft or get 1 shortened. Linkages are different, someone here will have some. Other members will chime in and u will be done b 4 u know it. Kim

Oh, so the later model 440’s are Magnums and not La ? You can get around the kickdown by using a cable, but what did you do about the shift linkage ? I might just do it, depending on what this guy wants for it. I’ll know in a day or two. It supposedly runs.

U could put in a floor shifter. Kim
Yeah, but what does that transition roughly cost ? I’d hate to cut up a good floor board. But, I would to have a 440 installed. I’m thinking that would be the easiest way to get around making linkages to work. I just don’t know what that would completely cost and how cut and dry it is to do. I just don’t want to spend a lot of money beyond the swap to make it work. What’s involved in shortening a drive shaft ? Someone cutting it and welding it ? Or do people manufacture new ones to meet your need ? I’m totally capable of doing the swap myself, if it doesn’t require a lot of fabrication for it to work.

ALL Big blocks are B series or the RB. The LA is the 273-318-340-360 engines.
The "Magnum" name only applied to specific 383, 400 and 440 engines. They were the ones with the higher compression, the better exhaust manifolds and dual exhausts. They also had a windage tray and an upgraded camshaft.
A 1970 Chrysler with a 440 had log manifolds and a single exhaust pipe. It was rated at 350 HP. The "Magnum" series looked the same but had several different components. The block and heads were the same, even the intake manifold! All 440s were either 4 barrel or 6 barrel. There were NO 2 barrel 440 engines. The "Magnum" series was a DODGE name....Plymouth models called them Commando or Super Commando. Chryslers with the same engine called them the T N T .

What did you do to make the 78 New Yorker shift linkage work in your Charger ? Put a floor shifter in it ?

Everything he said is 100% correct.
But to add to the confusion, Dodge came out with an updated LA small block which it also called the "Magnum" engines.
These were commonly found in Dakotas and Ram trucks.
They were referred to as 5.2 L (318) and 5.9 L (360). Same displacement but shared almost nothing internally as the old LA engines.

My car is a 500 model, it came stock with bucket seats and a floor shifter. You will need a linkage set for a 66-70 B body.

It ain’t gonna happen, seller is out of his mind. He wants 9 grand for it. Car is in good shape with 123 k original miles and I believe motor never has been rebuilt, way overpriced. My 360 has been completely rebuilt and I have it running fantastic now. I think I’m just gonna put that idea as something I would like to do reasonably, but likely will never happen. If it doesn’t, I can live with it. Even a proven completely rebuilt 440 and proven completely rebuilt 727 isn’t worth 9 grand to me combined. Guy is smokin a hell of a lot of dope, ha ha
