new cell phones

I do just fine with my old phone
I really on use for traveling
or if something happens on the road

I have a PC at home if I want to do the rest

I like being able to disconnect from "that ****" when I leave home
if I had one of the newest phones
(hand held computer & camera/cell phone)
I'd be addicted like everyone else is :poke:
walking around like a zombie, cringed neck, sore thumbs
always staring at it constantly
not seeing the constant beauty all around me daily

but;
the cameras on the news "****" really do seem nice
only reason I'd get another better phone

My 2012 LG went through the washer and dryer a few months ago.

I was forced to buy a new one and went with the $99 Galaxy a10.

No complaints although there are some features that lack a bit of intuitive-ness (like not being able to add or edit contacts from the texting screen, and the poorly documented push and hold #1 for voicemail)

I actually picked that phone because of it's size.

I measured the "phone pocket" in the shorts I usually wear to work (I have 6 pair) and bought one of the few that were not too wide to fit and long enough to grab onto, that was still a decent phone.

I worked for Sprint Nextel for 10 years. I still work for a company as their wireless contractor and I can tell you that wireless is going to get a lot more funky in the next 3 years.

I dealt with verizon (and gte before them) from a MAJOR corporate customer standpoint for over 15 years.
(over 200 2 hour SLA data circuits and over 1000 voice lines- I only dealt with data)

"God awful" was how I'd characterize their customer support model.

The first thing out of their mouth every single time was- "the problem is on your end and we will bill you if we have to come out".

In reality, we NEVER got billed outside of our contract because 100% of the time, the problem was on their end.

I even had to tell them on multiple occasions, which test equipment to bring to the site and what tests to run, and on more than one occasion, suggest what equipment in their CO might be faulty- and I was right 100% of the time, despite never having worked with, had training on, or ever even seen that equipment.

Despite the 2 hour SLA we never got a discount if sites were down for a day or longer.
That was above my pay grade, though.

You would think with a record like that, the first response when this particular customer called might be a little different.

I vowed after the second year that I would never be a single line customer for that company as long as I lived, if that was the way they treated a multi-million dollar account.

That organization switched to BrightHouse about 5 years before I left and the difference was literally night and day.

The conversation with BH usually started with "I'm not sure what's wrong but it looks like we'll have to dispatch".

I agree that the high end phone prices are way too high. Most people who buy them do not need that much bells and whistles, power, or storage and could get along fine with a budget phone.

Mine is a budget phone Motorola Moto G5 Plus. I don't need a phablet like the Galaxy Note phones. I like to be able to fit the phone in a side pocket and the cubby-hole in the truck.

If I leave the house to go somewhere a few miles away and forget the phone I don't panic and run back to get it.

I use Republic Wireless with unlimited talk and text and 1Gb of data at $20 per month. I hardly ever use the cellular data since I always have a wireless network to connect to.

My advice for those needing to buy a new phone is to wait until 5G rolls out or buy one that is 5G ready.

Also, keep an eye on the Sprint and T-Mobile merger which was approved last summer. Some experts predict the best coverage and cellular plans may result from the merger.

That's the same line the operators use over here (even the ones from malaysia who do the phone assistance).

So when I had a problem and I was told that...I said fine. I also asked to ensure that this phone was being recorded "For quality assurance purposes"

When the contractor (FOB South African) came eventually, he wanted to see the phone inside the house. I told him to check in the pillar at the street. He didn't want to, but I insisted. He reluctantly checked, and announced there was a bad connection crimp in the pillar. What a big surprise. Changed it and my phone/internet line returned to it's former self.

I get a lot of flack for still using my IPhone 5. Need a new one but two issues. The high cost and the size of them. I keep mine in my pocket when duck hunting or fishing out on the middle of nowhere. New iPhone look like a clipboard.
