need opinions here im going to build a 383 maybe a stroker for street use using the formula for the 348 hp nhra factoring ,my question is would you use a electronic or a points type dizzy i have a vintage mallory dual point id like to use also the book(a combination of bullitins ) that mopar put out doues anyone know where i can get a good intact one mine is all falling apart
 
I use electronic ignition on my builds and that's what I'd recommend. My experience is that the motor just has fewer ignition related issues. I'm not a fan of MSD because I build mainly street cars. I use the older MP electronic distributors. 440'

About distributor... what year is the car ? and how correct you wanna make it for the year ? I think on the easier would be get any stock dist ( points or elect ) and install a pertronix Ignitor I or II in it... maybe even III if you want it more "seteable"

If you want it with external module, I'm happy with the Rev-N-Nator box. Being my car is 74, the stock look on these makes a GREAT piece for me. and is being triggered by a fully adjustable MP ( Mallory ) distributor.

These are my 2 cents on somehow stock look.
 
I am using a stock Mopar electronic distributor w a HEI conversion. Great, reliable spark/ignition. Many options out there. That was my choice. May not be the right one for everyone.
 
There's a member here on the site @HALIFAXHOPS who is a distributor guru. You might want to PM him with your questions as he rebuilds and sell many types of MOPAR distributors for a wide range of years.

the car is my 62 dart im going 2 fours and id like it to look like day 2 with old school speed parts i like petronix also do they make a mallory conversion
 
Mallory has been discontinued for a good while now. Happy hunting for parts.
 
Well, in your shoes, i have no doubts on the proceedings. Ignitor system if you wanna make an upgrade. I haven't tested personally but haven't read anything wrong with them yet. My vote is toward to the stock and still reliable look

Needs to bypass or modify the ballast thought to feed full 12 volts.

Lot of ppl would run still the stock point system thought. As far parts available are still good quality that's an option what doesn't need to be discarded.
 
Here's how the distributor looks w the HEI conversion. With a 50,000 volt coil and replacing the resistor in the ballast w a 10 gauge wire, it looks very stock and can allow a .050-.055 gap spark plug.

I prefer MSD RTR - I like the reliability of electronic ignitions. Of course my ride was a stroker but just a 440 to 494. Hassle free in that area. Wish I could say the same for the six pack carbs ...

I'm running the original Prestolite Dual Point in my 440/6 Cuda with no issues. Like another FBBO member said in another post.....I'm comfortable with points because I'm of the age where as a kid my dad taught me how to replace and set points. When you changed spark plugs as part of your usual tune up, you did the points, rotor and condenser too. Back then that's all there was ignition wise, or maybe that's the only type of cars my folks could afford to buy..... :)

It looks pretty promising for us street/strip guys. You can run a street friendly curve and then swap it out at the track with your phone. Or if you want more consistency at the track, set it in locked out mode. I will definitely be looking into it.

It gives a hotter spark consistently to 6k rpm. Depending on the module n distributor, higher rpm. There many write ups on it. The aftermarket makes them for Dodge n Ford. The hotter spark allows a larger gap which allows for a more complete burn. Performance Ignition (D.U.I.) also custom tunes the curve.

Fascinating. Is this something I should look into even though I'm already running an analog MSD-6 and Firecore RTR distributor?

If yours is working to your liking, I'd leave it. I was rebuilding my engine, transmission, etc... didn't like the ballast resister reducing voltage of the Mopar Orange box electronic ignition. Started researching HEI as I had converted a few Ford 460 jet boats to HEI. For my purposes, purely street driven and fuel injection, it seemed a simple, cost effective conversion

I second your opinion.....as I've said more than a few times, i have an original Prestolite dual point distributor in my RS23V0A****** GTX, with out any problems....i change the points and condenser every 3 - 4 years and use NOS Mopar parts.

I'm a fan of retrofitting the stock points type distributor with a Pertronix II or III ignition. Wiring is a snap.
