Hughes converter question

I'm NO expert on converters, but I am in process of choosing one for my build, which seems very similar to yours. I'm working with my transmission builder, and He likes the Hughes products. You can call them directly, and have them build one specifically for your car, as You can give them the details of it. I'm just waiting for a few specs on mine, to get it done...
 
FWIW, I bought that same convertor. I followed the directions and pre-filled it and seated it correctly, and it still only lasted 100 miles. Ended up using a precision industries convertor and havent had any issues since.
 
They both say balanced so am I good to go?

I always thought you only needed the flexplate, which is an awesome SFI one to boot, then the converter could be neutral balance. Anyone sure if I'm right or wrong??
 
If you have a cast crank big block, it is externally balanced, by a weighted converter, and a weighted balancer. With the b&m plate you can use a neutral converter, but you still need the weighted balancer.
My question is.... what about the steel crank motors that use the heavy ("six pack") rods. I think there was an external balance on those too, but i dont know if it was on the balancer, the converter or both. Or even if it was the same imbalance as the cast crank motors?
 
I think the converter part number listed is for internally balanced so the external balancing flex plate should work.
I think the unusual 6 pack rods with a cast crank runs a different balancer then ly rods/cast crank and the converter is balanced the same. I assumed the convertors were the same anyway. I believe that was how the 70 6 pack was done...they made up for the rotating mass on the 6 pack damper and it was internally balanced.
 
Six pack damper was like a fat thin damper (all concentric). No big offset weight like the cast crank damper, Which you would expect.

Its that big heavy thing on the end of the crankshaft that balances an externally balanced crankshaft. And where's your question mark?:rofl:

are you referring to the weights on the converter
add a question mark if you think it could possibly help you

It seems like someone needs to do a sticky thread on converter weights engine combos... It would sure help prevent some mistakes.

From what ive read, no converter weights are gonna be requiered if he runs that B&M external balance flex-plate. This is what my thinking was asll along.

not something you want to just pick up at a swapmeet unless you really know
