B&S 'steering' piston knob??

This was one of the goofy things I did as a kid.....but at least there wasn't anyone else doing this Looks like the handle bar diameter is still the same as it was 55 years ago. Stuck it on this bike for the pic and was surprised to see that the rod fit it.

Nope....that's a bike that came here for some fixing up and the owner never came back for it. After 4 months I got tired of getting stabbed by those damn pointed handle bar grips so it got moved out into the cold.....another free favor that's being taken advantage of. My bike is a 14 year old Trek 3500 with the ball buster bar

I'm calling BS on it only being 55 years ago. Being as old as you are, it's more like 70 years.
