Core Support Replacement Question

Hey guys..

For those that have or are currently replacing the core support on their project (like I am), did you punch the vin number onto the new support?

I believe some states require an inspection for stuff like this to ensure parts aren't stolen. Just not sure about stamping the car's vin onto a new replacement panel from the old one.

I tried reaching out to the state patrol inspection office with no luck on an answer yet. From what I understand for my state, is that if I can provide proof of purchase for the part, and proof of vin titled in my name, I should be ok.

Thoughts? Ideas?

I would cut and weld the original if you have it.

Wouldn't that just defeat the purpose of replacing the bad one? It's pretty mangled.. And I really don't want to cut up a new one..

I am for now.. I have no intention of getting rid of it until I have a definitive answer.. or not even then..

That way there is no hankie pankie, why is there no numbers or why is it welded here or what not. Someone ask why and you hand them the original piece. Questions answered.

Straighten the metal if it’s not rusted at the serial number, and splice in - weld the new support where you need to. - lower core? Sounds like collision damage? We love pics around here.

How are you making out getting the old mangled one out and prepping the replacement ? I’m having a ton of fun (not!) getting through the various layers that hold it to the front frame rails.
I got one of those 3M belt files. Blasts through spot welded steel quickly but the high quality steel frame rails really eat up belts.

Check the progress in my photo garage.. I used a spot weld cutter and just went to town getting all that I needed to get them all out. Piece by piece. Just took my time and bent the metal where I needed to to access spot welds.

I am currently just mocking up the new core support upper and lower to make sure I have all the proper dimensions first. Once I do, I will get to drilling all the holes for plug welds (yay!).

I suppose I could do that. Yes, you can see the damage and the crap welding that someone else did on it in my photo garage below in my signature.

Looks like you already have it in? The top section of the original support looks ok. You could drill out the spot welds and use the entire section with the original serial # stamped in? A bit more work w alignment and such, but worth it for the #'s.
