Color choices; Original or Not?

Do I keep the original color combination, or change it?

So my project car, 1967 GTX, is a father son project. I tend to be more of a purist, but my son, 9 years old, likes the flashy cars (didn't we all at that age!). The original color combo for the GTX was Yellow with Black Interior Stripe Delete (which my son thinks is "hideous"), but my son's favorite color is Red. As there are tons of Red Exterior cars, I don't want to go that direction, but he also loves Black with Red interior, which I do think is an awesome color combo. It is not a Hemi or 4-speed, so even though it's a GTX, it's not like it's something super special, so I don't think the integrity of originality is a huge factor, though as mentioned, I am still somewhat of a purist. I am torn and would love you guys valued input! What do you think, try to work on him to keep it original, or change it up and don't worry about it?

Here is exactly what they would look like (less the Hemi of course!):

I think that letting your son pick the color combo would be a great way of insuring his interest in the hobby for years to come. And you definitely can't go wrong with black/red combo. Now you just need to add the Hemi and you'll be all set. :steering:

Black cars are a bit hotter in the sun. And those cars have to be arrow-straight, as black shows every flaw. But, you can always change it again.

I think yellow and black is a nice contrast and I think decisions should center around whether the car has the original drive-train. If not, do as you wish if it does it has more value that way. Sell it to a Purest and find a Satellite that is the color combo you want and dress it up with the extra money you get into a GTX.

Black cars are a show nightmare you will be dusting it every 15 minutes and not relaxing.

I would change the color from that pale yellow in a heartbeat. BUT, I would not go black. Looks gorgeous for about 5 minutes after you clean it, and then needs cleaning again. Not to mention all the little scratches in the clear are magnified with black. If it was me doing the father/son thing, let him have some shade of red.

It's your car , do what YOU want (doesn't somebody say that in all these polls?), but....
I have a list of all the colors I will never do again on my cars, interior or exterior.
1. Black
2. Black
3. Black
4. Black.
Besides, I really like that yellow!

Comments:
1) Agree with all of the negatives stated above about black cars.
2) Too many black cars on the road already.
3) I've already seen too many black, blue, and red '67 GTXs over the years and many were beautiful. That being said, I would be tempted to go with a medium to dark blue with a dark blue interior...not too dark though.
4) Your shade of yellow is great. Elegant and understated for a GTX. Sleeper. I like sleepers.
5) No red interiors! Too many of those around! Why so popular? Full disclosure: I have a '79 300...RED interior, I am scarred for life.
6) No stripes is the CORRECT choice.:)
7) BMW Imola red is a nice understated red...if you go with a red exterior.
8) If you go with an in-your-face LOOK AT ME color, then:
a) Porsche Continental Orange from the 1970s.
b) BMW Electric Red (aka: JAPANROT) from model year 2002). One of my brothers calls it "arrest me red". It's a beautiful red. It will garner a lot of attention.

Here is an "orange" on a Belvedere:

I don’t enjoy the stock yellow of your car. I don’t enjoy black cars either and would never own one, too much work and always looks dirty.

If changing the color use a factory color. Nothing will devalue it more than using something else.

Look at eBay and see what sells and what’s on there forever. Any bright yellow is awful. I don’t know why so many use it. One is painted similar to F6 green and it’s a no sale also.

As I always say, do what YOU like. However, if the kid is going to eventually drive/have the car, tell him he can do the work to change the color when HE gets old enough.

Good to have the kid involved on choices. But let’s face facts he is 9 years old, his life will change from where he is now. Hate to sound negative, but truth always hurts. Likely that kid will grow tired of the car and move on to some activity accepted but his peers.

have him do the work of a color change? Very unlikey.

How about Silver with a red interior. I had a 66' in Turquoise w/black interior which i loved but i got to admit silver w/red interior can be strikingly good looking. I've owned some black cars in the past and still have one, but it's the last one, way too much work for the fifteen minutes that it stays clean.

Had a pale yellow car didn't care for it. Like a darker yellow, Lemon Twist is to light. I'm a arrest me red guy.:D

Turbine Bronze with either a white or black interior.

Black is the most difficult color to apply in a car not to mention the fact that is always dusty, but Paul is right, what I would do, would be to ensure the interest of my son and let him pick the color combo, in the end is going to be his car and he would never forget the fact that you, his father, paint your car in the way he want it, memories remain, and that kind of memories, would be forever between you too, listen to your son. My 02 cents

I go back & forth on Yellow. No question it makes for a unique hotrod. All of my buddies say it’s what makes my car cool... ???
I’d probably go yellow with black stripes.
