Changing oil pan gasket

Before I tackle this tomorrow, I would like to know whether this can be done without lifting the engine up. Car is a 71 roadrunner, 440. Seems like the two bolts above the kframe might be hard to get to.
I just want to know what I'm up against, thanks
 
Try getting those 2 from the top. Regardless, changing an oil pan gasket while the engine is installed is a pain! 440'
 
I've done it on my 440 twice. It's hard to reach the bolts the front. Small fingers makes it easier. Use a 1/4" socket set with long extension and a swivel. Take the pan off and let the oil drip overnight to keep from having it constantly drip on you when you're prepping the block surface for a good seal not to mention bolting the pan back on.

I’ll throw my two cents in on this as well. Don’t overtorque the oil pan bolts. Put a dab of loctite on the threads and tighten just until the gasket begins to compress. Anymore and you’ll end up with leaks.
 
I used that summit nylon gasket/windage tray. It has 2 raised rows, as well as metal inserts around the bolt holes.
Also bought a pan bolt set, iirc nickel plated with the larger serrated bolt head, so it grips the pan over a larger area. Forget what their called.

Yup , I'm am also using that one piece windage/gasket from Summitt. The only thing I'm wondering is if the raised ribs go around the outside of the indentations on the oil pan flange.
 
Ok got the bolts off, so now how to you get the oil pan off, that is some strong stuff someone used to seal , I don't want to bend my pan trying to take it off. I tried a wedge but its just bending the pan.
Any ideas?.
 
Can you get a hook knife in around it?
Even silicone should seperate with a wedge.

I don't have a hook knife, but I have a sharp scraper that i use as a knife, whoever did this used something other than silicone, could they have glued it?
 
Maybe try hitting it with a propane torch?
See if it softens anything.
If it's got to come off, you might be looking at a new pan.
When it does come loose you may need to rotate the crank and get the counterweight and rod out of the way if it's stopped where it's low.
You also need to roll the pan to get it away from the pickup tube and screen.
 
Not on the 402 Oil Pan they don’t - I really liked the design but it did not work with my pan

Others have said it worked with the factory pans

Well short of bending my pan, I'm stopping for the day, LOL, so much for my debut in engine work. That is something I have not done a lot of. Question, doe the oil pan hold all the oil when sitting, I mean is the oil level past the rim of the pan.
 
Try a flat thin putty knife and go around the pan. You can tap it through the gasket carefully.

The oil level is not above the rim of the pan when full.
