Hi,
I'm putting the heads on a 383.
I have Mopar head bolts and they didn't come with washers.
Are washers needed?
Thanks

No. Unless they are special and designed to be used with washers.

A little oil on the threads and under the bolt head is all is needed. Just a little. I dip my finger in some 10/30 and give the threads a swipe. Shouldn't even have enough to drip off. You don't want oil to puddle in the bottom of the bolt hole.

No. Washers are for studs not head bolts
Not correct. Stock bolts did not use washers. Aftermarket such as ARP and others can have washers on bolts as well as the stud nuts. Poster did not say what bolts he bought. That's why I said no unless they are special.

I was answering the OP not you.
You are correct about stock head bolts not using washers.
He said he had mopar head bolts that did not come with washers so that told me they were stock style.

Compare the UHL of the bolts. Stock vs "mopar"

Thanks for all of the responses.
I didn't think they needed washers but I thought that I would ask the experts.

The Max Wedge being the exception. They used a hardened washer P/N 2402351 under the head bolt. Reason being, the MW used a stainless steel head gasket which was harder to compress, so there was a chance the underside of the bolt head would gall the head when torqueing the bolts.

What heads? What does the head manufacturer recommend?
They are Edelbrock 5090 heads. Edelbrock recommends "High quality head bolts with hardened washers". Could hardened washers be added with the factory bolts?

Just get the ARPs. For that head. Generally the big factory bolt head doesn't work in the bolt hole pocket anyway.

Would not be recommended. Just get the right bolts.
