Washed and waxed the Bee today as I want to start driving it more. Last week rebuilt the brakes and all was good until I was cruising down the road and heard a noise. It is hard to describe but it is rhythmic but not metal sounding. Kind of like leaving a spark plug out but not as bad. The car revs fine, idles fine, could be a weird exhaust leak and it is basically stock 383 automatic. Hell I don’t know I am just venting right now. Popped the hood no leaks so I shut it down and walked back in the house. Sorry for the rant but at least it looks good now!!!

Good Lookin Bee.... Does it make the noise only when driving? Or when sitting still? Only when driving look at the tires/wheels/brakes..

Driving and idle. It was to hot outside plus the car was at temp so poking my head around was difficult. I will check again in the morning for anything obvious and go from there. Going to enjoy some whiskey and try not to think about it.

Manifolds. I bought the engine from a buddy years ago and have been running it for years now. I know he put a different cam, roller rockers(what he told me)intake and carb otherwise stock. Has only about 10,000 miles on it and has never given me any trouble until today. I start and drive it at least once a moth to keep everything fresh but only a small drive. It is about a 10 mile trip getting on the freeway and then back home.

This was my dads car and honestly it is hard for me to work on emotionally as it brings back many memories. I almost sold it a few years back because of this but I am trying to get past it as now I guess he is still there working on it with me. It really deserves to be driving and have finally brought myself to do just that and now this and that is why it is so frustrating. Don’t know why I am writing this so i am sorry for my rambling.

Emotions are perfectly normal, Thank you for sharing. Beautiful Bee. Your dad had great taste.

Thank for the replies and compliments. I am hoping it is just a manifold gasket but I was to nervous to let the car run and honestly after 3 hours of washing and waxing to hot and tired to do anything about it. Getting older really sucks!!!!!! I am leaning towards an exhaust gasket leak or cracked manifold. I will update in the morning.

You’ll find it and may be surprised it’ll be an easy fix. I usually walk away from it too and attack when I’m in a good or better frame of mind. Nice car! When you work on it think of good memories of your dad and that’ll make it fun to do!

It's dang near impossible for anyone out here in the world to help diagnose problems via
the written word, honestly.
Perhaps you could make a quick video (with sound!) and post a link to it for us?
That would help, I'd think.

I'm sure of one thing, though - your Pop is really proud of the courage you're showing by
your efforts at taking care of it, despite what I'm sure are some deep emotions.

Oh, and don't worry about expressing yourself around here - I do it all the time, have for years.
The others are used to it and it does help one to do so sometimes.

If it is a automatic check for loose converter bolts. Possible cracked flex plate.
If a stick, dis-regard above statement.

Looking good Milt!!!:thumbsup::thumbsup: If we were still down there in Vacaville, cr8crshr and 6pa100, we'd have you drive it over to the house and we 3 could trouble shoot. I know you don't want to make the drive to Reno, but if you did, my new place is easier to fix and work on them as I now have a 3 car garage and a nice shop in the smaller single car space...Let us know if you need anything in the way of parts or tech help...cr8crshr/Tuck:usflag::usflag::usflag:

Thank for all of the replies and help. Yesterday I was frustrated, hot, tired and was going to make a video today but to my surprise when I started the car I could tell it was a bad manifold gasket. Looking with a mirror all around the manifold I do not see a crack but will check when removed. The sound was totally different as I am guessing nothing was up to operating temperature.

I will try to get this replaced next weekend. One thing I do not remember is do the bolts for the manifold go into the water jackets? I will look this up but I know you guys here know that answer.

Yep, they sure do - and yep, it's very advisable to have a FSM (factory shop manual) for your car
(or something equivalent).
You will need to put some manner of thread sealant on the bolts before installing them back in.

yes
they do go into the water jacket
if it has the stock 906 heads & stock HP cast iron exhaust manifolds
the exhaust bolts;
they usually; 'it will have studs'
& 3/8" barrel nut &/or fine thread reg nuts & washers,
when it has 68-70 HP manifolds
unless someone replaced them with bolts along the way

good luck

nice clean & gleaming 'bee' too

Just my own experience here when our 64 Fury had intermittent popping sound from under the hood and a piece of hose listening around the exhaust manifold. I had the manifolds resurfaced and that’s all it was. Hope this helps you.
