DeltaV's '70 Charger 500; The Omen

This arrived today. Looks pretty nice to me. All of the threaded holes look good. Port dividers look good to me.

Someone must have changed out the factory Holley spread bore carb for this Carter AVS when installing the aftermarket a/c.

The FSM says the Carter AVS-4741 is for an automatic 440 with air conditioning.

The a/c system is not going back in the car. Yeah, I know, Savannah is hot and humid. Sacrifices must be made.:D

Been buying parts:D.

Also, I have two paint & body candidates lined up. The first guy is coming by today (Saturday) to look over the car and give me a cost estimate. Also, when he can start and finish the job. I have to call the second guy and setup a time for him to look over the car; probably in December.

Good luck with the body & paint guys.
No job is ever easy, but I reckon they have a real good head start with such a solid car to begin with.

Did some cleaning while I waited for the paint and body guy to show up; and then waited some more.

Sundown was approaching and so I put everything away. Murphy's Law...he showed up 20 minutes later. He likes the car and can't believe its condition. He will be back tomorrow at noon.:)

Definitely a four Advil day, but I'm going to have a glass of red wine instead. :drinks:

The good side. The vinyl top is difficult to clean, but I'm getting there. No bubbles underneath. :)

The not as good side below.
(fender and door were replaced after owner #1 merged into another car after exiting a highway). The door is from a '68 Charger.

I found a '70 Charger 500 being salvaged in Texas around 1990 and paid a king's ransom ($50) for the door below. I unpacked it today!

The pushbutton is black on the door below. Pushbuttons on my car are "chrome". I don't recall seeing black ones on other Chargers.

Did some superficial cleanup in the engine bay. The 50+ year old factory paint has held up well.

Scrubbing bubbles for showers for the top DeltaV ! Spray it on and work it in with one of the plastic "finger" heads on an upholstery cleaner can. I tried everything else for YEARS and it would always revert back to grey looking. I cleaned this before Dega in '19, still Black.

To me, this car is almost borderline - could be pieced back together as is.....or have a full restoration. Either way the car is outstanding - excellent body condition. Almost seems a shame to re-paint it. :)

I have been struggling with that observation, but it does have warts.

The black buttons on the door handles were on 1968 models and some early 1969s from what I have seen. The buttons can be swapped out in the handles too. I like the black buttons. They give a little contrast to the handle.

Nice 70 for sure! It always makes you happy when you score something like that..

Cigarette lighter. The body is marked:
72 CASCO 12V
There are no other markings on it.

You have such an original car, I would be tempted to leave the body as is; the patina is cool! Two positives with not painting the car: (1) You can brag that is it (mostly) original paint and unrestored and (2) If you get another ding it is no big deal!

On the other hand, nothing beats a super clean, nicely painted car that shines and stands out!

Good luck whatever route you go!

So, candidate #1 showed up on Saturday at sundown after I had returned everything to the garage. He liked what he saw and came back Sunday noontime and looked the car over for roughly 90 minutes. He couldn't believe the condition. "This car is worth a lot of money" he repeated too many times:rolleyes:. He wouldn't give me an estimate for paint and body work..."I don't give estimates until it's stripped down to bare metal". I can see his point, but I did say "estimate" and my car isn't a basket case. Oddly, he said I would have to remove the windshield myself or have a glass installer remove it. The vinyl top is drying out, but there are no hints of rust underneath it. Afterwards, he got back into his truck and asks "do you want to sell it?". I politely answered "no" of course and he drove off.

Maybe things will go better with candidate #2 next month.

Maybe I'll just do paint and bodywork myself, learn some new skills along the way, and buy more tools.

I am a fair body man but my metal working skills need improvement. I can fabricate patch panels to repair rust but I am nowhere near as good of a welder as a Carpenter/Framer. Some people live by the know your limitations mantra but I never lived that way. I like to jump in and muddle through and figure stuff out instead of just surrendering and paying a pro. The difference is when there is a time crunch. If a huge leak appears in the house plumbing, I call a pro.
I'll admit that I did have another guy do the body and paint on my red car because I wanted it to turn out better than I was able to do at the time. I traded labor for that. He did the body and paint (Most of it anyway...I painted the engine bay, trunk, door jambs and underbody) I framed his 1800 sq ft shop.

Great looking car, love the thread and the progress. Personally...I'm a fan of "original":

Mine went from this:

To this:

with just (a LOT of) wet-sanding, compounding, and polishing. Not original factory paint, but "period-correct" probably from the mid-late 70s, my guess since it was a FL car, paint fade. Everything else is original, so if you'd like to compare any notes or details just let me know!

You are very lucky you found such an incredible car. It's beautiful. Good luck with it.

Original "Jack Istructions" trunk label and placement.
