I was working on the headlights of my '70 Charger and got to thinking about the aero tricks that were done to the 1969 Charger 500.
I've never looked real close at one but I understand that a grille and headlight bezels from a 68 Coronet were used and they were pushed out to the edge of the fenders.
The stock placement of the headlights in the 68-70 and even the 3rd generation Chargers is deeply recessed.

My question:
Was there some sort of special headlight mounting setup for these cars? Did they use stock mounts but with some type of spacer behind them to push the lights out further?

Without putting a tape measure on it, the lights look to be at least 4 inches further forward than a stock 69 Charger.

Now look at how recessed the 1968 Coronet headlights look.

It is because of this that I started wondering about the 500 headlight mounting.
I'll never own one of them and car show season is fading here so I'm counting on you guys!

Interesting feature near the 11 o'clock position.

Not mine:(

They used 68 Coronet headlight mounting pods for the Charger 500. There were Charger 500 specific mounting brackets for the grille and headlight pods. Spacers were used to mount the headlight bezels further out than they were mounted on the Coronet. If I remember correctly, the original 69 Charger headlight pods are behind the 68 Coronet pods in the grille frame assembly. There was also a sheetmetal grille corner surround on each side with a rubber strip on the forward edge of the grille corner surround. I saw a picture where someone moved the headlight pods out on a 70 Charger and put a 68 Coronet grille and headlight bezels on it, giving the car a Charger 500 look with the wrap around 70 Charger front bumper.

My least favorite thing about a 2nd Gen Charger was the 69 500 front end. Looks off to me. Bug eyed or Googly eyed looking to me.

I had one. At the time they were valued at the same money as a Charger R/T. Most people preferred the standard Charger grille and rear window to the Charger 500 grille and rear window. Very few people knew that they were purpose built. The ones who did looked at them as a failed attempt to beat Ford. The truth is that Charger 500s won more Nascar races than Daytona Chargers did. The Daytona breaking the 200 MPH barrier cemented its legacy!

I have the same opinion. It's certainly better for aerodynamics, but it looks googly-eyed to me, too. The lack of pop-up headlight covers just kills the look. By the same token, the paired headlights on a 1966 Coronet, for example, look positioned too close together, making it look cross-eyed.
