Anyone out there try to stuff a dual quad long ram in a 62 to 65 b body with an rb mill? What type of problems did you encounter?
 
Motors are offset to the passenger side in our old Mopars. Clearance around the driver's side would be OK, but you would have to chop into the passenger side inner fender panel for intake manifold clearance. I looked into this 50+ years ago when I had a '62 Dart that I had put a 383 4-speed into. I was offered a long ram set-up for cheap, but after doing the measurements, decided to pass. RB would be a little worse because it is wider than my 383 was. I have seen it done, though, with an area in the inner fender chopped out, and a box fabricated and welded in for that part of the intake to sit in. Always looks cobbled up IMO.

Those poor mechanics that had to service them back in the day. They probably bolted for a GM shop.:)
 
The other part of the equation is the exhaust manifolds that were specific to the long ram setup. You almost never see them for sale, and I don't know how they would fit in a B-body. They are required to supply exhaust heat to the carbs/intakes.
 
So the long and short of it is:

I have a friend that is attempting exactly this, his solution is going to be to have angle plates made to tilt the rams up. This is a 440 in a 62 dart.

What about clearance to air cleaners with hood closed? He would have to put another wedge under the carbs to get them to sit level again. If it just for eye candy, it would be easier to run an inline 2X4 like the '62 Chrysler 300H with Football air cleaners. I had this on a '64 Polara 500 I built, and it never failed to bring a crowd when the hood was opened. This was even a factory option on early 413 before the Max Wedge was introduced ( 385 hp. ). Also a dealer option on 361/383.

I am just a bystander in this deal, he told me that is what he was planning to do and I saw this thread so I thought I would share. I will say that wheres there a will theres a way and I am a big proponent of people doing what they want with their cars. I am quite certain someone has done it, not sure the details but people being people (especially Mopar guys), I have no doubt it has been done.
 
I have seen it done on a B Body. It looks like a cobbled up mess. The inner fender and shock tower has to be cut a lot. And a relocated top shock mount. You don’t need the specific exhaust manifolds for it to work. It will be cold blooded that way.

I own the proper car with a set on it and they take a lot of space and not much hood clearance. So tilting them will help the inner fender issues but create hood issues big time. Then will have to make your own balance tube which seems easy enough until you realize the tilting will limit the space for that tube. Then the pivot for both carbs linkages is cast in to one side manifold so it won’t be in proper alignment to operate the other carb. The carbs need to be synchronized at idle and open the same rate for this to system to run right.


So with this info start in and show photos!
 
Most of those rams had hydraulic lifters, but not all. But the plugs and plug wires are tough, and fixing exhaust leaks. Lots of exhaust connections and pipes going on under there. Getting to the steering box is bad, and also the upper control arm eccentrics for alignments. The valve cover gaskets require intake removal, lots of time.
The more you work on them you figure it out and it gets better, easier.
 
Don't know if I'm that ambitious. We'll see. Considering it as I' m still fighting to seal the 4bbl intake.
 
IMO, factory didn't do it for a reason. It will never look quite right either. If you want dual quads, the Edelbrock CH28 is better than the factory inline (as well as a half a ton lighter). Even better (in looks too), the weapon of choice is the trusty cross ram!
