He was very lucky. So many things can happen at speeds much lower than that.
And could have hurt/killed others. That stuff should be done on a closed course, not a public hi-way, even the "AUTOBAHN" .
JMO. I have witnessed hi speed carnage and it isn't pretty.

This generated quite a hype.
Just watched a video from a german lawyer.
He basically says when there is no speed limit there is a recommended maximum speed of 80mph you should ideally maintain but you can also go 259mph if you want.
BUT if something happens (and you survive) you can (and probably will) get problems.
In this case they probably want to pin "reckless driving" on the bugatti driver despite nothing happend and there was no speed limit.

I was surprised, though, at how little traffic there was.

No one died (we hope) and it proves that ‘car and driver’ were up to the job!

It happened here in the 60’s, they used the new M1 for testing road legal race cars...

It brought about the speed limits and most folks say it was “TOO high” at 70mph...

Accidents are what they are!
They happen when you least expect them...

Next time someone does this, it may end badly...

Couldn't agree more. I've driven on the Autobahn at relatively high speeds and have been passed effortlessly by others. There are too many unknown factors waiting up the road to feel confident.
Having said that, drivers over there know to stay to the right. Unlike here in the states.

I guess the closest thing to that we have here in America is the Silver State Classic Challenge although sanctioned and made as safe as possible.

@33 IMP Yes! Highest speed ever on a public highway! Rosemeyer died doing it. When I got into Benzes in the Early Seventies those Thirties Gran Prix guys were my heroes! And the Fifties guys too, Fangio and Moss! Yes, I was into Mopars and Mercedes before they were!
