When I logged on to FBBO today a pop up ad for the Rudest States in America showed up. So I took a look. According to one study, here they are. Of course, New York is #1, but I demand a recount. I get the others, but Iowa and Alaska? And Idaho?
  1. New York
  2. Virginia
  3. Washington
  4. Iowa
  5. Alaska
  6. Utah
  7. Massachusetts
  8. Rhode Island
  9. California
  10. Idaho

I wouldn't put any credibility in this . I've spent many years wandering around this country . Most folks are pretty approachable if you smile first . I've been to certain cities where folks are more concerned about minding their own business . This can come across as being rude

I truly this is dependent on how one treats others...

And yes I also agree that those who want mind their own business(which they are entitled to do) may come off as rude or standoffish(?)

PS Should have just said that i agree with Dakar Timm (thanks)

I'm pretty sure for iowa they must have done all they're research in Iowa city. There are some damn fine people that live in that state.

If I was asked to list faults with Americans, "rudeness" would be quite low on the list.

I take exception with #2, Virginia. It is NOT the state as a whole. Here in southwest and central Virginia, people are generally pretty friendly. However, I have noticed that casual encounters such as in stores, etc. are less friendly in the big city areas like Norfolk, Richmond, and of course, northern Virginia near Washington D.C.

Same in NY. Most people north of Westchester County are very friendly and helpful. I find the same true for Mass, NJ, Cal, FLA. Get out of the big cities and it's a different culture.

The rudest people I ever encountered in the U.S. were Latino employees in the Orlando area. They all seemed to have a chip on their shoulder.

Is that a total # of rude people or the ratio? I think you have to take the total population into account. 1 rude person per 100 with a population of 50,000 is one thing. 1 per 100 with 9,000,000 is another. Less rude people overall, but a much higher ratio.

"rudeness" is a lot of things ... farting noisily in public, belching in public, chewing with your mouth open, wearing a hat at the dinner table, not saying "please" or "thank you", speaking when not spoken to, etc, etc.. I'd like to see what the survey criteria is !!

I lived in Alaska quite a few years ago - What I do remember besides the beautiful natural scenery was how “tough” the people seemed. I’m not sure about rude - but I would say down right unfriendly. I was from Minnesota when I went there so it was night and day for me. But again that was a long time ago.
Iowa and Idaho - not on your life. Some of the friendliest people in the country.

Surprised that Florida didn't come in second. We have a shitload of New Yorker's here.

I always hate these stupid subjective posts of some made up negative metric. Like worst movie, band, song. Only politics deserves this. And that's because they were fully warned. Everything else? Is just chirping from the cheapseats.

Yeah, like “world’s best pizza” … in one person’s opinion!

It is.
I have noticed that each time I have been out of town, the people seem really nice no matter where I go. It occurred to me that MAYBE that is because I am happy to be out traveling and I greet them with a smile.

Beat me to it... I was thinking the EXACT same thing.

Speaking of the city dwellers of course. NY country folk are usually as nice as anyone in my experience.
