Yeah, for me it was When Mark Martin retired. By then, the cookie-cutter drivers had taken over
the thing and BFJr had all but trashed the sport as originally created.
BTW, I just watched a short "highlights" video on YT of todays' "race". What a travesty....

It's still racing. That hasnt changed. The rest is just dressing. I watched it and enjoyed it, but I have a better idea for Nascar: Instead of plowing a million dollars into a temporary short track and then tearing all down, put half that much into a local short track somewhere, race it, and leave the improvements behind!

I get a kick outta people who complain the track was too short and how much Nascar has changed from the good old days. Well, in the REAL good old days they ran lots of 1/4 mile local tracks. Those are the tracks that built the sport in the first place .

More short tracks. More dirt.

Pissed me off when Nascar wouldn't let Bandon Brown run a "Let's Go Brandon" LGB sponsored car.
My girlfriend was(is) a huge Junior fan. Since he retired, she doesn't care a bit anymore. I had the coliseum race on, but I didn't watch it.

I was hunting something to watch, and saw the listing on the guide, but just passed on by. There wasn't jack on, so I found something else to do.

While I'll agree that NASCAR is no longer
arm out the window, cigarette smoking,
booze hauling bunch of hillbillies they used to
be (when it was edge of the couch), technology
and safety for drivers is first and foremost.
Not many these days strive to beef up their
hotrod to cary extra weight and out run your
local sherif on a back country dirt road.
NASCAR these days is all about the dollar just
as any professional sport. I'm willing to
accept that, but keep in mind the roots of
the sport. Those that had passions and egos
to match. Those passions and egos are alive
today. As with a putter with a wood shaft
vs one with titanium, 18 holes is 18 holes.
It's akin to going from carburation to fuel
injection.
PS...I really could have done without the rap.
(but the race was in LA).
It's easy to watch 34 cars doing 200 mph
on your TV screen. Those in their cars see
things your average arm chair fan will
never witness. It's still a life and death
sport regardless of management or rule
changes.
I can't help but to think that NASCAR is trying
to appeal to some of the liberal base as to
more or less place the opener in California.
(and please, don't let this thread run a
familiar downhill course towards politics).
I look forward to debates and or comments
that deal strictly with motorsports.

I can’t get into the new wheels. I don’t mind the new cars but the wheels…. the fact that they have a single lug nut bothers me the most. How is that “stock”?

Nascar has to change to survive as a business. I'm sure there were codgers in 70's complaining about cheating aerodynamic bodies, sissy safety equipment, and the loss of dirt tracks from the schedule. Today it's aluminum wheels, transaxles, wokeness, etc....
Even I will complain about changes because that is human nature, but none of it will keep me from focusing on and enjoying the core of the sport: hard-driven miles in high horsepower sedans.

It has been going down hill for years now and as some above have stated, cookie cutter cars and not even close to being...STOCK CARS...which was the intent from the beginning. I just read up on these “new” stock cars.
Composite body, (fiberglass) rear independent transaxle, sequential 5 speed... Yeah, not very interesting to me. Maybe it’s my age, but losing a gated shifter, and the single wheel attachment. It’s basically covered wheel F1, without the HP. They may as well get rid of the jackman and go with air lift at this point.

You should check out Canadian Nascar sometime this spring. It’s actually quite good. Mostly short tracks, real driver feuds, and less PC bullshit. The drivers aren’t millionaires either. They’re racing for the sake of racing.
