Aligning console door 1970 Charger

I'm having some trouble getting the console door aligned on my car. The car is a 60K survivor so no changes to the floor pan or anything. I'll post a picture later today but I just cannot seem to get that door to line up no matter what I try. Should the console be removed to line it up and then reinstall? Has anyone had success with this?

I would remove console from the floor and see if things straighten out. If they do shim the console accordingly. One of the two has change, console or floor.

Thanks, how does the console come out? I can see a couple screws inside the console at the bottom and 2 on each side in the console, plus the trim screws on top and the shift knob (AT). Is there any hidden screws or anything?

Never removed one on a charger, not sure how many brackets there are.

That’s all my 66/67 Ply cars have (4 screws). But Dodge does do things differently at times.

I've taken mine out and reinstalled several times. I've had the same problem you're describing. It's going to need some heat. If I'm not mistaken, there are only three screws holding it in. I'm about to take a console out of another car and will take photos.

Brackets are the same, I don’t think you should have to take the console out.

Here are a couple pictures. The gap at the front and back won't seem to line up with the door opening. Im going to take the console off today and see if it will line up without being mounted on the floor and then go from there. Also there are 2 small bumpers that are on the underside of the console door, probably rubber. These are crumbling and original, are they available for replacement does anyone know? Thanks.

These pictures are from our Charger. I just put another b body top plate on it for reference. If you are asking about the bumpers under the door, They are mainly for anti rattle. I would create a well and fill it with Permatex Polyurethane or something like it to make the bumper. Or you can buy self adhesive foam strips in rolls and use that. You might be able to adjust the door hinge to line up better. I see that there are horizontal and vertical slots in the hinge for adjustment. If you take the door off you can get access to the 2 back screws that hold the front plate down.
I am certain that there will be more advice.

I restored my console and had everything aligned perfectly. Until I installed it in the car. I asked about it back then and the general concensus was get it close and forget about it. Even 900+ point show cars didn't have perfectly aligned console doors.

I got the console off and apart, I'll spend more time tomorrow working with it on the bench. My initial opinion is that the spring on the hinge is too strong and biasses the door to not sit straight in the console. The spring has slightly twisted the hinge, I think that is the problem. Thanks for everyones input!

I can’t add too much on adjustment - the slots in the hinge allows some repositioning but it seldom (if ever) comes out perfect. But I did come up with a tip for fixing the right, rear corner of the lid from digging into the console body when opened. I put a couple of those small, round, clear plastic bubble, self adhesive bumpers on the inside of the console box. As the lid is open the lid side of the hinge hits the bumpers and keeps it from opening a full 90 degrees, thus keeping the corner from digging into the console. It still opens plenty wide for access. Hard to photograph (and even describe) with the door in place but you can see how the lid is restrained. The bumpers are out of sight behind the hinge.

On more than one car, I've enlarged the slotted holes in the lid portion of the hinge to get the necessary adjustment needed for it to close square.

Thanks Richard, that's exactly what I did yesterday. I'll be reinstalling the console this afternoon and will post some pictures of a hopefully better fitting console and door!

Well It's not perfect but I got the console back in and as straight as possible! I had to enlarge the holes in the door hinge to get the door to align a little better, I also did a little tweaking where the console mounts to the floor. Now the door doesn't hit the chrome trim on top and opens and closes freely. I think this is as good as it gets! Sorry about the blurry photo.

I was able to align the ones in my survivor '70 by loosening the screws from hinge to console, AND hinge to lid. That gave me bascially 360 degrees of adjustment and I was able to get it to stop hitting the edges, catching when trying to open, or popping on its own. It ain't perfect...but it works like it should for a 52 year old, unrestored car.
