I had a shop who said they would install my cam in my 63 440 powered Dodge. But he wants 3000 and then another 1000 to do my MSD dist and 6al box. I may have been retired for 15 years now but that just seems way higher than I would have charged in my shop. I have the new cam, lifters and timing chain. Isky 292 Mega. Its about the same as a 509 cam. I also have the billet dist, 6ALl-2 box and 8.5 wires with heat sleeves. I guess it just seems like a lot for just the labor. Oh yeah another 500 to bolt in my 4 factory seat belts. Anyone got any leads or am I just being cheap.

Sounds like he doesn’t want to work on your car at those prices.

I would look around more.

Those prices are from someone that doesn't want to work on your car.
Not in Orange County but not too far away, give Mopar specialist Bob Mazzolini a call in Riverside. Here's a link...

Where abouts in OC are you located?

Sounds excessive. They were trying to scare you off, or they don't feel confident doing the job, so they are padding there estimate enough to figure it out. I would say to seek a different option. I wouldn't feel confident in that shop. I'm not in California, so I don't know any place, but I would bet there is several... Cali has more of everything!! Bob Mazzolini sounds like a name that is familiar and probably knows what they are getting in to. Just my opinion, and good luck. Let us know how it turns out.

Obviously doesn't want to do it. Keep in mind no one is going to warrant the cam from going flat or other problems since you're supplying all the parts which may have a lot to do with that first high estimate

Who would warranty a cam against going flat these days?

Seal Beach. I've heard of bob. I'll give him a call.

Talked to bob. He's just building motors now. Still looking.

Can you do the job yourself, and then get someone to check over/help with starting and running it in?
I did my first cam swap in 2020 and it was a success. Great feeling and saved a few bucks to spend on other parts of the car.

I spent 50+ years as a performance engine builder and machinest. But I retired and sold my tools and house. I now live in a 55+ senior community and just have a car port. The Nazis here dont allow any working on cars. I guess I'm gonna have to borrow a buddys driveway for a couple of days. I'm disabled now so getting under the car is a big no-no. But yeah I can still twirl some wrenches. Building a long rod 327 chevy right now at one of my friends house. I ported his heads out to 280 cfm and we are degreeing everything right now. I love to still have my hand in a motor or car project. If I cant find a local shop or guy I will find a wide spot and go to town.

@Gunner1 - I live In So OC and prior to selling 68 GTX i tried several speed shops in the area - non to my satisfaction. Then was turned on to OC Cars in Lake Forest. Nice shop, knowledgeable friendly people and the best I could find around here. They specialize in classics, muscle cars, mechanical and restoration. You can reach Eric 949-768-3192. 20761 Lake Forest Dr. #K, Lake Forest, CA 92630.
[email protected]. You can name drop if you want (Kevin West) but it’s been a few years because I sold my X. Good luck!

Have you priced what the labor rate is in your area? I bet it's close to $100 @ hour! You have your own parts, that taps into the dude's profit, they got to make it up somewhere!!!! Why can't the retired guy in the mirror do it, he's retired and got all the time in the world???

Mainly because I have no garage or car port I can use to work in. Also I’m 75 and busted up. I think I’m gonna try to do the ignition here. Maybe the guards won’t say much with just an open hood. Yeah and he said his rate was 200 per hr.

15 hours to do a cam swap sounds about right at that price. Part of that problem is look where you live! Good Luck

Went out and popped the hood today. Opened up the stock dist. Found some loose screws. Got those tight. The Vac adv is shot. Won't hold any vac. None. Blocked off the ported hose and it cleaned up the off idle stumble. Set the high rpm advance at about 32 at 3K which ended up at about 18 at 900. Reset idle rpm to about 800. Dropped it in gear and pulled the rpms to almost 3000. No noise. Free rev is so fast. I'll drive it this weekend and play with the timing by doing roll-ons in second from 1000. No security came by so I lucked out.
