I'm sure this has been discussed many times here before but my searches didn't yield anything, plus things change.
Let me first tell how this came up again with me.. While building my 68 charger (with an insurable, street legal "roll bar"), I did a good bit of researching on how I could best out fit the car thru out without accidently making it uninsurable or illegal on the street., which I'm sure most responsible people would go along with if you don't want law suits and/or worse, etc.. Most all I read was that a full "roll cage" isn't legal on the street, or insurable., in most, or a lot of states.. Fastfrwd 9 years, While I was at a car show the other day and saw a car with a full roll cage, which is not that unusual to see. So I thought I'd politely ask the guy who he had his insurance with and did they ok the cage. He replied "Hagerty, and yes they did ok the cage, and they insure it while I'm drag racing also".. I replied "I also have Hagerty, and when I got it I specifically asked if they could insure a full cage, and asked if they could insure while racing on a drag strip and told a definite no on both questions".. He said he moved from California to here in Tenn recently and had got the insurance in Cali. Before the argument got to intense I walked away. I called Hagerty the next day just to see if they had changed their policies/coverages since I got with them. I talked to 3 different licensed agents who all had a good laugh when I asked my questions. They all also confirmed my car is covered everywhere except racing on a track and shut down area., and it is covered in the pits and on the return road.
Here are my 3 questions.
1- Is a full roll cage street legal? If so, what state/s?
2- Is a full roll cage insurable? If so, with who?
3- Is drag racing insurable? If so, with who?
Any hard proof would be good. Like a link to info or a pic of your ins policy where it says what you say. No private identity info needs to be shown tho.
Thanks, DK

Insurance while racing is available. It's not cheap.
I specifically asked a Northern insurance rep, on two seperate occasions, if they insured cars with rollbar/cage for the street.
Said yes, both times.
My cars with bars/cages aren't ready for street use yet so I haven't signed up yet.....but I will.

Might depend on which state you're in. This is fully street legal and insured.... in Arizona.

I have Hagerty in Arizona. Full roll cage on street car.

Same here...although in Florida.
Well then I guess the Hagerty reps I spoke to in california just didn't want to be bothered.
Maybe it's the 454 in an Opel Gt that makes them nervious?

Maybe the guy wasnt wrong.. Hagerty has track insurance it looks like: HPDE & Track Day Insurance | Hagerty Motorsports
Thanks., I saw that and from what I read HPDE stands for Hi Performance Driver Education, a road racing school where you bring your car. And looks like Track Day is timed laps on a road coarse. They also say something about auto-cross. I'm not interested in anything but pure drag racing on a strip. I read everything that Hagerty had to read on their site and never saw anything about insuring drag racing. But if anyone finds something I missed plz post a link or take a pic of the screen. Here is from their faq page.>

Does Street Legal Race Cars...Pro Street, fall under Drag Racing?

Yep. That's where I got that pic from. In Questions- FAQs, Hagerty says "not competitive events.". And they also say time trial events are ok but all on-track coverage is only for "HPDE events", which is a racing school... I still am having trouble believing there is anyone who offers drag-racing insurance or most any type of racing insurance. I'm calling Northern later today and ask them about it.

Look on the NHRA website I've seen on track coverage there.

So when I got Hagerty on my 66 - no where shape form did they even ask if it had a cage. they asked about a bunch of other stuff hi-perf related. I had to send a pile of pics and lists of some parts etc, we came to an agreed upon value and poof.....insurance premium was set.

So I guess maybe just try that route, they will get pics with the cage/bars in it. If they dont question it, you have proof that you provided the pics if it comes up at a later date. By no means am I saying to lie or defraud, but if it doesnt come up and you voluntarily share pics with the cage/bars in it. Thats now on them.
