I upgraded the round back to a square back on the 69 RR. I ran a 10g wire directly from the alt to the starter relay and left the existing wiring in place. I still have the 1 wire voltage regulator. I grounded one of the field terminals to the alt case. Randomly picked one. Anything else I should do before cranking it up?

Left the existing wiring in place how? Hanging lose or attached where it normally goes? I personally would connect the original alternator output wire back to the alternator along with the new wire. At the very least make sure it is well taped up as it will have battery voltage present.

yes it is connected to the alternator as before. The added wire is to split the load and take some current away from the bulk head connector

I am specifically asking about the field terminal I grounded. Does it matter which one? I saw one post that said ground the “rounder” terminal as seen in this pic but my terminals were both the same

If you have this style voltage regulator, be sure one field terminal on the alternator is grounded to the case and the other terminal is open. Does not matter which one. Verify with meter to confirm. This will eliminate any confusion with the shape of the case.

If you have this style regulator, both fied terminals should be open and NOT grounded. Again, test with a meter and verify.

If the square-back is assembled correctly for a ’70 and up application, it does not matter which terminal is grounded for it to be used with a mechanical regulator, pre-’70 application. Some remanufactures will remove an insulating washer from one terminal/brush assembly screw, substitute a metal washer to ground the terminal then clip off or “round off” the terminal to prevent a wire from being connected to the grounded terminal. When boxed as a pre-’70 replacement application.
