Why Did This 1968 Dodge Charger R/T Just Sell At Mecum For $170,000? (It’s Unsafe And Bad)

That guy's voice is friggin annoying!
He makes great points but Christ...

"Some guy" mentions "B Body page/site" several times. Who's he referring to?

There's a sucker born every second and who owns this car now is out a lot of money. Sorry for their luck but if you don't know what you're buying and don't have a professional look at it for you, TS!

The history should be done on this car to find who did this work. Then this person should have their name/shop publicized to warn others until they are put out of business. They have no right to even own a screwdriver.

like any used car, it's always "buyer beware"; I have no sympathy for "fools and their money"

I have seen on this site, guys asking the most elementary questions; these folks obviously know nothing about automotive mechanical stuff and have little to no business getting behind the wheel of a 55 year old clusterfuck

much like the jerkoff who had the sticky throttle issue on his 1100 HP Comet, he may or may not have assembled some parts, but had zero idea of how things work

I don't care if people blow their money on junk; just don't hurt anyone in the process

If someone would offer me 170 g's for mine I think I'd be on the next flight to Vegas and hit the blackjack tables like the Rainman.

What?

No one here to say "because that's what someone was willing to pay"?

I thought there's be dozens by now.

I almost can't believe it.

Everyone's saying how times are rough but MORE THAN ENOUGH people are obviously still able to burn money like there's no tomorrow.
Doesn't matter if it's paying 40$/day for parking at miami beach, 10k for a table reservation in las vegas or 170k for something like this. They still can and are doing it.

If you have no idea you won't be able to tell if someone is a real "professional" or not.

My advice is do not use these cars as an investment if you don't know what you're looking at.
You can still buy one to have fun and learn more along the way but do not "invest" 170k expecting to get them (or even more) back out eventually. Also don't rely on any "experts". Recipe for desaster.
Just as with any "investment" do not invest in something you don't understand and do it yourself.

The guy bought this without taking any precautions. So maybe 170k isn't all that much for him.
In this case i would suggest doing a complete nut and bolt restoration. It's a 1968 charger r/t after all and he already burnt a lot of money anyways.

No matter what car is up for grabs' there is an *** for every seat and a stupid *** willing to pay for it.

Not everybody who buys these cars are experts, or a serious hobbyist. If you are going to bid at an auction, and you can do a pre auction inspection, pay somebody who knows what to look for, and do a complete recon on a vehicle that you want. You must seperate emotion from your thinking. This car is a disaster, and the person who did the work is a scumbag with no regard for the safety of the potential owner, and the general public. Mecum should have had the balls to reject this car, but money clouds judgement, and morality. The guy in the video should have been more serious with his tone instead of sounding like a cherry at a whorehouse (FFS).

I love the 68 chargers, but 170k would be a hard pass for me. I would not go to an auction anyway. I would rather buy from someone from this forum. At least maybe faults will be disclosed.

Big name auctions have become a place for rich people to artificially inflate the market prices on these vehicles to drive prices up for everyone else.

Maybe these guys asking elementary questions are trying learn something. So that disqualifies them from driving a fifty five year old cluster ****? Did you know everything mopar without asking questions about basic things? These guys asking basic questions are hoping to get advice, and a little guidance while they are learning about cars. Either help them, or not instead of ripping their heads off for being "stupid"

didn't call anyone "stupid" or rip off any heads......... but before getting behind the wheel of a 4000 pound, 400 hp weapon, you had best have a clue

these cars are no longer "brand new and factory prepared" for public consumption; most have been cobbled together by unqualified individuals

and I feel I am one of the more helpful guys on the site; but I stay in my lane and never veer off into topics in which I am not an expert....... I learn something new here every single day

Why did it sell?

Because there was a buyer who was willing to buy what a seller was willing to sell.

Live and learn.

Seriously, as much as I love second generation Chargers, who would pay 170k for a green automatic car anyway? Not to mention all the hack **** done to it! The dash alone would cost 10k for a correct restoration. I have friends who work at Instrument Specialties, I know what it costs to restore one.
