WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (AP) — A Tesla driver was killed and a passenger was critically injured Saturday when the car plowed into a fire truck that was parked on a Northern California freeway to shield a crew clearing another accident, fire officials said.

Four firefighters who were in the truck when it was struck on Interstate 680 were treated for minor injuries, said Tracie Dutter, assistant chief of the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.

The driver was declared dead at the scene, Dutter said. The car needed to be cut open to remove the passenger, who was taken to the hospital.

Photos showed the front end of the car was crushed and the $1.4 million ladder truck was damaged.

California Highway Patrol Officer Adam Lane said it was not clear whether the driver may have been intoxicated or whether the Tesla Model S was operating with automation or driving assistance features.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating how Tesla’s Autopilot system detects and responds to emergency vehicles parked on highways. At least 14 Teslas have crashed into emergency vehicles while using the system.

Dutter said the truck had its lights on and was parked diagonally on northbound lanes of the freeway to protect responders to an earlier accident that did not result in injuries.

The fatal accident occurred around 4 a.m., and it took several hours to clear the freeway. The firetruck had to be towed away.

The Model S was among the nearly 363,000 vehicles Tesla recalled on Thursday because of potential flaws in its “Full Self-Driving” system. While the recall is aimed at correcting possible problems at intersections and with speed limits, it comes amid a broader investigation by U.S. safety regulators into Tesla’s automated driving systems.

Does anyone think we're ready for a car that drives itself in the world we live in right now. I'm sorry, but you have to be a fool to own one if you bought it because it drives itself. Think about it!!

I am firmly 100% AGAINST self driving cars. And the thought that they are bringing out self driving tractor trailer trucks is terrifying. I live in the mountains of southwest Virginia. There is a long mountain in the Interstate in my area. It is VERY common for there to be a truck crash on the downgrade side. Usually when the morning news comes on about a traffic backup, and BEFORE they give the location, I can pretty much nail within 2 mile markers, where it will be and which side it's on.

My 42 years in the trucking industry taught me that the powers that be, whether public or private, get high on the idea of not having to deal with the what it takes to keep competent drivers behind the wheel. Unfortunately, the alternative is worse.

It will be interesting to find out whether the driver was impard and the automatic driver function was in use. There ya go. buy a Tesla, get drunk or smoked up, and let the car drive you home. :BangHead: :BangHead: :BangHead:

Guy down the road from me with his self driving Tesla. Across the narrow bridge he goes, reflections and rain make the self driving go crazy. Crashes and dies was asleep the whole time. No thanks

Someone sent me a video the other day of a kid driving a Tesla on automatic while getting a BJ & then her climbing on top of him to do the nasty. If they used that as a promo video and she came with the car, I'd be sold on one!

I'm sure he was just driving home..... at 4 a.m. Awake and alert, I'm sure.
(Sarcasm!)
I would bet that Mike's post above, is exactly what happened.

You can keep the Tesla, but I would like the B.J. Option in my new van!!

There’s a couple of things about Elon Musk I like. His cars? Can’t think of one.

AND you don't share the video? On another note I always felt screwed when buying a new vehicle so THIS would be quite refreshing!
