I'm sure some of you have seen an or heard about an episode of Uncle Tony's Garage (not that i watch it) where he's insisting some guy do a burnout. Anyways, the guy blows up the transmission and is lucky to still have his feet. How do you avoid blowing a 727 by doing a burnout? I saw some talk about not letting off until it shifts to second?

That’s how you do It. Don’t lift in first. And at the drags in the water start the burnout it second gear.

How many millions of burnouts were done without exploding the 727?

and what happened to UTG? “Excellent carnage”
Like that’s something great that happened. Not into the fist bumping white dudes either.

Saw a 62 Plymouth Max with tunnel pushed up to about 6" from bottom of dash. Broke guys leg.

My 727 has a freewheel in first gear. I can burn out and let off the gas There is no compression braking in first. It’s a reverse manual valve body.

Watch the above video for important info, especially the last three minutes. Two other things to remember... 727s are hard-core tough... you can start your burnout in second gear...if your motor is got the uumphff to do so....won't hurt the trans. If you do start in first, just get out of first asap. When and if you rebuild, use a better front drum and a bolt-in sprag. Most important of all, if by chance you break a ujoint or diveshaft under heavy load like a burnout, THE TRANS MUST BE TORN DOWN AND THE SPRAG AND BACK CASE CHECKED BEFORE USING IT AGAIN!! This is exactly what causes the bomb seen above.... fried sprag will allow the front drum to overspeed way beyond its capabilities.
The thing a lot of folks may not realize about the UTG vid seen in post #1 is that crappy old trannies are limping around with worn out sprags. You can still get the thing to move by manual shifting....behavior is different from first gear in drive and manual low..... but beat on it like this and BOOM.

That’s exactly what NOT to do with your 727. Never let off in first with that valve body.

Then they lay under the 4300lb car with only a floor jack... Dumbasses

I like Uncle Tony. I was always a use the part that works, without caring about “correct”. He seems that way as well.

Just never get back on it in first after pedeling it.
I think the trans blew up in Tony's video cause it wheel-hopped on the first attempt, rolled the sprag and then the driver tried it again, in drive.
I did NOT find the escapade amusing.

I always start in second gear and shift into 3rd as soon as possible. That goes for my stock cars all the way up to my drag cars. Never blown up a torqueflite. Knock on wood.

Agree with 6PKRTSE. I never, ever do a burnout in first gear. Second only, or 2/3. If you MUST do a burnout in a 727 without a manual valve body, do it in first, not drive, and allow it to shift to second before backing out of it.

One must remember; this isn't a ford trans.
In a stock or lightly modified 727,
Whether in D, 2, or 1st, the Trans starts in 1st.
But only applies the band in 1st. Not D, or 2.
Start burnout in manual low, work your way up with out letting off the gas.
Manual valvebodies, RMVB'S, go with the suppliers recommendations.

@RemCharger you gave me the dreaded red X, does that mean you like the fist bumping white dudes?

Disagreed with starting out in 2nd at the track.
You end up actually starting out in 1st, without applying the band. Like starting in drive.
Always start in 1st with a fully automatic 727.

I only got one leg left at this point so i'm not even going to drive a 727 unless i've put in a billet steel front drum, low band apply valve body and a 16 roller bolt in sprag.

I want to know that i've got compression braking in 1st gear because that way i know that i've got the low band apply still working and the I got the sprag and band holding it in first.

A blanket is always good insurance...if you can find one that fits. Been running turbo action stuff for close to 30 years now...
