Well I bought this last week , she ain’t pretty and not a B-body , but she is solid and Trail ready.

My son bought a Comanche pick up last September. Really solid, but it was run into a tree that had fallen across the road, smashed the roof and windshield down against the steering wheel. Since it is a uni-body the P.O. could not fix. My kid got it for cheap. Cut the roof off a junked Cherokee and welded it all up. Yes they are not exactly the same, but he ended up with a nice little daily driver for cheap. Reliable as they come.

Nice! Very solid little trucks, never had any major issues with the 4 that have made their way through my family. Unfortunately, rust kept bringing them to their demise waaay before the drivetrain would give us any hiccups.

Love the older boxy Cherokees!
Mechanically simple machines and parts are cheap and plentiful- Rock Auto is your friend. Unfortunately rust took most of them here in the Northeast, so maybe a desert one will live forever. It is not unusual to find 4.0 powered ones in junkyards with over 300k miles.
Side note, I picked up a southwestern 95 YJ that is stone stock 4cyl 5 spd. I'm having a ball with it.
Good luck!

what year second gen XJ ?
1984-2001 unibody
what engine ?
loved the straight six 4.0ltr
what trans ? auto or manual
manual course is best for wheeling

looks to have a few inches of lift & decent sized tires
no freewheeling hubs ?

looks to have a winch, that's always nice

what's the plans with it ?
any more mods (?)

looks pretty good in that 1 :poke: photo

cool rig nonetheless,
at least in the dry western climates
there's very lil' rust issues

good luck & have fun

Nice looking rig!

I loved my XJ, but like many...rust took her away before her heart quit beating (4.0/auto). Sold her to a buddy who wanted to build a trail rig.

I also had a YJ Wrangler years ago. Sold for the same reason. I was jonesing for another 4.0 vehicle recently....so I picked up an '06 TJ Wrangler a couple months ago. Torque, 3 pedals....and a convertible. And, XJs are bringing stupid money around here these days, so I ruled that out mainly because IF you can find one here...it won't be a manual trans. And I wanted a manual toy.

The 87-on was an awesome package. 4.0 with the AW4 trans is reliable as heck. Minor issues with oil leaks at the filter adaptor, pcv/ccv lines, v/c leaks occasionally, exhaust manifolds cracking and not much else. Never saw any trans issues at the dealers.
