Steal an airplane gets medal pinned on him

If you read the comments, a guy says he knew him and this didn't happen.

My Wife noticed that too but there are several other links to this story and none of those dispute it.

Another comment was that Bob Hoover did virtually that same thing.

What guy, which guy. If you go through media you going to for truths and lies on both sides. Thanks for your input.

@Nxcoupe no worries here, it is an interesting story and made me dig a little deeper into war time history.

I knew a guy whose claim to fame in the army was to get stoned drunk and run amok in a tank destroying a few things along the way but thankfully not hurting anyone. I wish I was in that room when he was disciplined.

Col Bruce Carr was the D/O the Ops director at Tuy Hoa RVN in 68-9 when I was a Capt flying F-100s. He was highly respected, but only so much as fighter pilots will respect anybody...
The HQ weenies in Saigon thought it was a tactically sound idea to have us cruise at 20.000', exactly 300 knots, precise heading and release the bombs on the radar guy's command, rendering more jungle into craters filled with malarial mosquitos.: the Skyspot mission. (Mention this to most Nam fighter pilots and they will puke on the spot...)
With lots of gas, bored and pissed at 0200, I led the first ever "boom the base" mission at tuy Hoa by the Sea: 45 deg nose down, afterburner lit, go supersonic and ..."Boom the base!! This was not popular with, well, anybody trying to sleep. This procedure lasted about 2-3 nights, when Col Carr said: "NO MORE booming the base". Ever after that it was called" Bruce the base" but not to him...
Stock photo, but the SM tail code was my squadron, 308th TFS
PS: USAF retains heroic, achieving unit numbers: the 354th for a time had A-10s at Myrtle Beach, and I am sure there were photos of Bruce Carr on the walls.
