An Allison X-4520, 1300 hp. in 1927.
It’s interesting about the ground crewman riding on the wing. I’ve read that this was common for P47 groups during their taxiing to the runway area to help guide the pilots. And then they would drop off as the pilot turned onto the runway area. The ground crews were pretty attentive to the care and condition of the aircraft.
After getting a little too low during a strafing run in Milan, the pilot managed to nurse the plane 150 miles to get home.
