I lived one summer (1983) on 18th court (Hermosa Beach) about a block from the sand. Never got the hang of playing guitar, but one day practicing my guitar "homework", two kids (about 8-10 years old) stopped to listen. After a minute or two they threw something on the ground and ran away. I found it was not a candy wrapper, but a one dollar bill! I gave up taking guitar classes soon afterward but still have the only dollar I ever made "playing" guitar.Screen Shot 2024-03-25 at 6.48.21 PM.png

Around 1984, the year I started playing I was out on the front porch practicing and the old black man from across the street came over.

I was working on "Seek And Destroy", and started playing that since it was one I knew almost all the way through.

When I got to the "running, on our way..." part that has the kinda groovy partial chord pull-offs followed by a descending 8 note run a few times- he looked right at me. I figured he was gon na say something like "what the F is that crap"...

I was kind of surprised when he said "I think you got it", and slowly wandered back to his porch.

The only "tune" I learned on my nylon string classical guitar was "Scarborough Fair" which I practiced over and over and over again in an apartment with super thin walls. My next door neighbor commented once on how he could hear me play/practice (kind of a nice way to complain). On the other hand, I could hear him snoring through the same wall.

Fall semester of 83 I was in SoCal not too far from you. What a great time!

80-83 I lived in Palos Verdes and Torrance. I had mopar friends in Redondo and surrounding "beach" areas. Kally was already turning for the worse....
I just made a bunch of money, bringing cars/parts back to Detroit [lots of them]. This was before transport companies caught on.

Youre right - it was turning to compost and I was mad at Brian Wilson for lying to me, and even tho I sat on Colorado Blvd for weeks looking for an old woman in a Max Wedge Dodge, it was still pretty good in many places. Plus, it was the early 80s! So I enjoyed it. :)
