23 spline into a 440

Probably this question has been answered, before I buy a 440 and an A- 833 from an A body, besides the tail shaft and the obvious parts( bell housing , plate , clutch etc) can I mate the transmission to a 440 ? i know the 440 came with a different spline and if not want do I need to do to conect my transmission to a big block? I've read in FABO that can be done, no, am not going tp drag race the car, but my coronet was/is manual @Cranky

Just use a 23 spline throw out bearing and disc. All else will work.

The A-body 833 is shorter than the B-body 833 so I’m not sure if it will work in your application plus you might have to use the earlier bell housing due to the smaller input bearing retainer. FYI, there are plenty of 23 spline transmissions running successfully behind 440’s.

The input bearing retainer vs hole in your bellhousing should be considered. I’ve swapped those bearing retainers successfully OR there are adapter rings. The 23 spline will take the abuse of a 440 with nitrous….not “sure” if you run slicks

I would try to find a B body version, it would be an easier fit. Driveshaft length and shifter position are different.

A body puts shifter in a weird spot. Some were light duty and had 904 output spline (pretty old and rare at this point) they were behind /6, and 273 in early A bodies.
I've been pounding my 833 overdrive for almost 20k

Haven't been at my computer for much of the day but looks to me that all the other replies are on the money. And if you do need a different front bearing retainer, Brewer's should have one. I also second what the guys said about using the B or E body gear boxes....unless you can't find one of those for a reasonable price. But sticking in a 'A' body trans into the bigger cars wouldn't be the first time it happened. I know the later transmissions have two shifter mount positions which in turn makes them more expensive it seems.

Life is always easier and usually cheaper when you get the right item in the first place !! Pass on the A-body trans !

Thank you so much for your replies, yes, I know is easiest to buy the correct transmission for the engine, some of you known where I live, and those who don't let me introduce myself, my name is León and am from .... Mexico, yes am Mexican, in fact some of you have made fun of me for years ( yes Roger am looking at you @kiwigtx) and me being Mexican let me tell you something about the b bodies here in Mexico, ma mopar never sold a 440 here in , the biggest engine was the 360 so no big block transmission avaliable , and that's why I need to work with what is avaliable here and buy the rest in the US to made it work and this is why I am in this conundrum nevertheless THANK YOU SO MUCH for the advices guys.

Small blocks also came with the 833 transmission.....need the right bell housing to mate with the small block and trans.

As above the shifter will be in a different spot, need the correct front bearing retainer, also will need a longer driveshaft.

First of all, what car are you putting this in? Does the tranny have multiple shift locations (probably)
