The 383 for my runner has been done and sitting in the corner shrink wrapped for 6+ years, but does that mean I am the one holding my own car in paint jail?

Told they won't even have time to pull my aircraft engine cylinders until January and I might get it back in April... not amused in the least!

Body shop work gets scheduled before I even bring home the car, so I'm in line and a few months is the normal. I've only built one engine myself and it was with everything bought new, Dart block and heads for a Chevy 383 stroker. The rest I've bought crate engines for, in and out.
I have friends whose 70 Challenger will have been in paint shop jail for 5 years next Feb. Sitting in primer and still needs hood and front fender work before painting. And he’s paid the guy the money up through painting. He’s talking to someone else now about picking it up and finishing it. Ridiculous.
I put 500 - 1500 hours into the body of a car; I'm the one who's in jail!

Paying someone up front and waiting 5 years is common. I'm not saying anything, but just imagine what I'm thinking....
Well I have had 2 440s through the machine shop in the last year. I do the building just have the machine work done. First was 493 stroker, cleaned, checked for cracks, line honed, decked, bored. 030, balanced. Took 2 weeks. Second was stock 440 for GTX, cleaned, checked for cracks, mains checked for alignment, decked, bored. 030, rods reconditioned, crank turned. 010/.010, balanced took 1 week. This guy has a room full of engines, heads, cranks and numerous other parts that have yet to be picked up, or paid for, so when I come in he knows I have money and my work goes to the front of the line.
You guys are scaring me about paint and body because I want to get my 65 Coronet painted to put the stroker in and don't want it in jail forever.

at least the machine shops lose less stuff than the body shops...
Myself along with a handful of other guys could write a book on the body shop end of this question.
From the shop side of things..
Instead of a 10" long thread i will just leave it at many car owners create their own problems / jail sentence.
Once your in lock down if your a problem you get time added on.

I think the fumes affect a lot of paint and body guys
For me I paid as we went along. I made it clear at the beginning I had the money set aside to pay for it in total and they would get paid certain amounts when we hit milestone. Then I was very prompt to get them the money as agreed, the same or next day.
